Martin Dreadnought
The very first dreadnought guitars were designed and crafted by C. F. Martin & Co. in 1916, but marketed in Boston and New York exclusively under the Oliver Ditson brand. Originally made for Hawaiian slide playing style, the very first dreadnought made was a Model 222 shipped to Ditson in August of 1916. After Ditson went out of business in the early 1930s, Martin introduced the D-1 and D-2 dreadnoughts for standard playing style that would soon become Martin’s iconic D-18 and D-28 models. Over the past 100 years, the Martin dreadnought has helped define what an acoustic guitar can and should be, and subsequently, it has become one of the most popular acoustic guitar designs in the world.

I have played many different brands of acoustic guitars, but never a Martin untill now. I purchased an HD28L recently and let me tell you; there is no sound like this guitar. I have never experienced such a true rich deep tone like this guitar offers. I'm spoiled now, so I gave my son and my friend my other guitars, because I won't play them any more! The sound is deep and true! Pick one up and play.... You'll change your mind about Martin guitars for good like I did!

.The HD-28 is the finest sounding standard dreadnought on the market and surely Martin's Flagship guitar. After playing a few high-end guitars over the years, the HD is without question THE player's guitar. While the consensus gripe among acoustic guitarists is most Martins produce dull or muted bass notes, I agreed. Not so with this clean and bright Martin. When I purchased my first HD-28 over a decade back-recently lost in a house fire-I spent months looking all over the North East to find the right guitar and was close to going custom. I was hoping to find both good sound balance and a bright and response. WOW! The HD-28 has that and more. It is easy to play with well chosen wood-ebony fretboard-Sitka spruce top, rosewood back and sides. . In short, it is the gold standard of acoustics. What makes the HD-28 sound so clean? Lighter, scalloped bracing. A change from the D-28-all for the better. This results in a guitar with consistent, clean and resonant sound. One thing to note is the light bracing requires a med string set at the max. If you stick with lighter strings (med-light are my favorite), a near perfectly balanced guitar will provide years of enjoyment. Best sound for the bucks. The exterior looks are also pumped up a bit with herringbone edging. The "action" required no change once I broke it in. I am glad to have an HD once again making my world sound sweeter.

.I've had my HD-28L for 17 years. It seems to get better with age. The sound is very loud and rich. It stays in tune and is a joy to play. The top wood is beautifully cross-grained, and the neck has become richly polished from years of playing. For a guitar of this quality the price is quite reasonable. If you want the very best, the HD-28 is the one.
