Martin DreadnoughtThe very first dreadnought guitars were designed and crafted by C. F. Martin & Co. in 1916, but marketed in Boston and New York exclusively under the Oliver Ditson brand. Originally made for Hawaiian slide playing style, the very first dreadnought made was a Model 222 shipped to Ditson in August of 1916. After Ditson went out of business in the early 1930s, Martin introduced the D-1 and D-2 dreadnoughts for standard playing style that would soon become Martin’s iconic D-18 and D-28 models. Over the past 100 years, the Martin dreadnought has helped define what an acoustic guitar can and should be, and subsequently, it has become one of the most popular acoustic guitar designs in the world.

Ordered this instrument on Sun arrived on Thur, and I've been smiling ever since! Played a gig on Sunday, and performed flawlessly! I've never spent so much money on a guitar that I hadn't played or listened to! Such is my trust in Martin! Iknow they redid some bracing for this model last year, but whatever they did, they did it right! Unrivaled for sound and playability! The best acoustic I have ever held in my hands!

.I just love the D18. In own 2. A 2009 and 2012. The all new model is outstanding in looks sound and playability. Loud! Great projection. I did lower the bass side just a tad for my liking but that's it. This guitar shines playing folk music (Neil Young Jimmy Buffet and Bob Dylan) I guess all martins do but I just love the mahogany. I gig my 09 more than my 03 D35. My 2012 D18 is for studio only. Better buy than the D28. You won't regret it. Buy it!

.I purchased this work of art in April 2013. Honestly, I did not expect to be writing a review this soon as it takes a good guitar like a Martin 1-2 years, at least, to really begin to open up. I have an aged D-16 and MMV which I jam and gig with to get both the Mahogany and Rosewood sounds when I need them, and love them both.
This instrument is really remarkable, especially when I consider the price I paid. It has opened up beautifully and has a rich resounding, yet exquisite and delicate sound.
I am stunned that there are not more reviews out there, this is not a bargain, but an outright steal in this price range. Martin has come up with a gem that not only has the best of all worlds in terms of sound but is an absolute joy to play. No matter what your style everyone who has touched this has remarked on the incredible sound and playability. I cannot even imagine what this will sound like in a couple more years. If you can go for it while Martin is still making them.

.This is my 5th Martin. I have from a D18 up to a 000-28 Clapton. As with all the others, the tone is everything you expect from higher end Martins. The redesign of the D18 with the scalloped bracing and the foward shifting of it has made a big difference in the sustain of the guitar. The set up is to me is perfect right out of the box. The neck was changed also and feels really good.
Martin Standard Series D-18 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar Natural
.I have a 2011 and a 2014 D-18. The newer guitar has the design changes that were made in 2012. These include an ebony fretboard and bridge, tortoiseshell pick guard and body binding, open butter bean tuners, forward shifted scalloped braces, and a 1 3/4" modified low oval neck with a high performance taper. I consider all of these changes to be good ones, with the exception of the new neck shape. I like the wider nut, but the neck just feels too shallow for my hand, causing fatigue and muscle cramps. Many people like this neck, as everyone has different sized hands. I would highly recommend playing one before purchase.

The sound makes it all worth it. I love the sound of my straight-braced older D-18, but the new one has a sparkle and shimmer that is wonderful. It is very light weight and resonant, with a good bass response. This is a lot of guitar for the price, and I don't really think that you can find a much better sounding model no matter how much you pay. But play both a straight braced older D-18 and a new one before you decide. I also like rosewood guitars, but this guitar takes a back seat to no one... .

.The centerpiece of any collection or guitar players tool box. Best all around guitar made today. Every professional musician in the buisness has respect for this instrument. It is to the music world what the Winchester Lever action rifel was to the US. Calvery. The voice the playability, it does everything, the musician is capable of preforming. Makes you a better player. "The right tool for the Job. My undying gratitude to Toni Hover for going above and beyond the call of duty (as usual) in securing this purchase for me. She "IS" customer service; Custom Guitars friend is, lucky to have you, on their team.
Martin Standard Series D-18 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar Natural
.I've owned two Martin D-28s over the years and this D-18 sounds richer and less muddy and is much better for fingerpicking. The complexity of tone that you can get out of this guitar is absolutely stunning. I have a Gibson J-45 too and this guitar is about equal to it. They are both amazing guitars in pretty much every way - looks, sound, details, playability, etc.
Martin Standard Series D-18 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar Natural
.I tried everything in the Martin line at a music store. The D-18 was the one. Oh yes, I tried everything else I could get my hands on in the same price range, but this had what I wanted. I went back to the store and it was gone. I took the leap of faith and bought one at Custom Guitar's Friend. I had always thought that I needed to play something before spending the cash. Very happy with my purchase. This one hadn't been handled by a hundred people at the store either. I think it's safe to buy a quality brand name guitar online now.

.For a dreadnought this guitar did not have much base tone. Could not pick through the guitar as sound was just not strong enough. Well constructed guitar though with a great neck and fretboard.
Martin Standard Series D-18 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar Natural
.I have been playing this Guitar since the first of November 2016. It has opened up nicely , but it is a quiet guitar for a dreadnaught. The construction was perfect, played right out of the box with no set up.
