Product Features

Built in collaboration with Seth Avett of The Avett Brothers, the Custom D-35 Seth Avett Signature Edition Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar is a 14-fret dreadnought featuring a high-altitude Swiss spruce top that is harvested in winter months to produce a lighter-weight wood with better stiffness, and gives it a tight and even grain. The Custom D-35 Seth Avett Signature Edition Dreadnought also sports a three-piece back composed of East Indian rosewood with a flamed koa center wedge. Seth himself designed the copper snowflake inlays placed in the ebony fretboard. Includes case.

This is the most beautiful instrument I've ever owned. Read mixed reviews regarding the copper snow flakes on the fretboard. I think they really add something to the appearance. Koa strip in the back seals the beautiful appearance. And the tone- out of this world. I've been playing a D-18 since 2005 - and love it. This one is so much brighter and punchier. Love it and would definitely buy it again.

In forty years of playing, this is the first guitar that I have ever purchased online, untried in person. What initially drew me to it were the stunning looks – especially the koa wedge in the rosewood body. What convinced me to order one was that, in every single one of the eight or ten review videos that I could find on the Web, the Seth Avett D-35 always sounded fantastic – no matter what the mic setup or audio quality was, or who was playing. The guitar's tone was always outstanding. (The video from Brian at Custom Guitar's Friend Private Reserve was especially delightful).
Now that I actually have my Seth Avett, I must say that the videos fall short. You must play and hear this guitar in person to appreciate what Martin has accomplished. This is, in my opinion, the best sounding acoustic guitar that I have ever played, bar none. The Swiss Spruce top makes the highs just sparkle, the koa wedge adds a midrange that is warm and sweet, and the lows are robust and pronounced, without the "boominess" of some regular D-35s. In typical Martin Dreadnaught fashion, the guitar is a Bluegrass and Country "cannon", but the tones are balanced, and shine throughout the entire musical spectrum. Martin and Seth Avett hit one out of the park when they designed and produced this particular D-35 model.
Additional nice extras are the Grover tuning keys, the Performing Artist mahogany neck, and the pretty copper snowflake inlays in the ebony fretboard. Also, the custom case is built like a tank, and does a terrific job protecting this beautiful axe.

.overall - a very nice guitar. I have had it for about 6 months - wanted a Martin D-35 - and this one was a little different than most. Has a very good loud sound - not the best for fingerstyle which is what I typically play - so I use a Taylor for that style of play.

.I've had mine since 11/2016. I played one at the Martin Guitar Factory, 6 months prior, and fell in love with it. I love this guitar, and anyone who plays it does too. Friends have used it on recordings, because it's the nicest guitar they can find. It really sings, and sustains like crazy. The fret board is super wide, and the scale length is a bit longer than what I was used to. I love playing Neil Young covers on it, because it just has the right sound for it. I call it the museum piece. I keep it in the case with a gel based humidifier, and it's almost always perfectly in tune when I take it out to play. The snow flake design is beautiful, they do darken over time, but playing it seems to keep them from darkening too much. Mine has a bit of bear claw on the top, I look at it like a birth mark, perfect, and unique. Everything about it says high quality. Attached video is a friend's recording with it. Mic ed with a blue sparc, and a Carvin tube amp in figure 8 mode.

If you want one of these "dream" Martin Dreadnaughts, call Derek White at Custom Guitar's Friend Private Reserve guitars. The man is very knowledgeable and friendly, and can answer any questions you have about purchasing one of these six string gems. Also, since I couldn't actually try out each of the three or four Seth Avett's that Custom Guitar's Friend had in stock, Derek personally went through every one of the guitars on hand, and picked out the best sounding one for me, based on my description of what I was looking for. He definitely chose a winner.

.I am mostly a finger picker, and most have said this guitar is not good for that. I disagree. I'm not a very good player, and this Martin is the one I pick up before my 1965 00018. This guitar sings. An added plus is putting my nose over the guitar and smelling that beautiful alpine spruce. Never thought about smelling a guitar before.
