As soon as I opened the box, I saw the headstock was damaged and there were other imperfections on the fret board and body. .This is a good sounding and playing bass. I find mine extremely well-finished as well (actually flawless). Much less cumbersome than a typical acoustic bass guitar as the ovation back definitely gets more volume and sustain for its size--and price--than regular style acoustic basses. The neck is substantial, but comfortable and fast, with normal electric guitar action and string spacing.
Unplugged, it sounds responsive and loud, good for living room or porch practicing. Good volume, tone, and sustain, but the lowest notes are a bit bright. Plugged in, deep fundamentals open up and it sounds great. Very good electronics that bring out the best of the acoustic sound -- deep, rich, and clear. Responsive to different playing styles for surprising versatility, can sound aggressive when you dig in. Clean sounding three-band EQ adds variety. Worth considering if you want to add an acoustic-electric, especially if on sale. Price not out of line given the quality, but not cheap either for a specialty bass.
