If "mass" is an important ingredient for a five-string, then, SQUIRE hit a homer in that department: it is MASSIVE! The huge, 2-inches-at-the-nut neck, with the stunning, un-dotted Ebonal fingerboard is a joy to play. The spacing on the strings is what I have been waiting for in a "five": the E, A, D, and G strings seem the same as my four-string Precisions and Stingrays. The dual-pickups and active-circuitry offer a clean spectrum of mind-boggling, "anything-is-possible" sounds and tones. The "slap-switch" is VERY useful, efficient and FUN. By watching my tuner, and experimenting with DAMPENING of the low-B string at the bridge, I was able to shorten the excursion-time of the open-B dramatically; and, as such, I am really optimistic about what will be possible with the proper limiting/compression, high/low pass, attack/gain applications; and, the addition of an 18" speaker-cab to my, now, 3-way system. I was expecting the first and second harmonics to be a nightmare, but, they were right-on and the intonation of all five strings was fine, right-out-of-the-box. The thing is HEAVY but,I am certain it needs to be so. The black finish on the body is superb, as is the overall craftmanship. There could not possibly be a better VALUE out there! No matter what your cast is as a musician, this is the only five-string you will need. Kudos SQUIRE!

. Note: Its A Squier!! so in the beginning what you pay for is what you get
I bought the bass when it first came out, so I paid a little bit more then what it is now , In the beginning id loved the sound and love the black neck , but as I became a wiser bass player I knew what kinda sound I wanted so in doing so I had the whole in side changed, I change the pick up to EMG and put an AGUILAR OBP-3 in side and now its a (WHAT I CALL IT ) a SUPER FENDER SQUIRE bass sound like a 2,000 dollar bass, sounds better than the Regular Fender
For me it was a good start off bass for getting into a five sting bass, when you first buy it youd think its the best bass you ever bought!! but once you start hearing other bass and how it sound its gona make you think, i also have a custom made bass and sometimes i still play the fender squier more cause of the changes i put into it
Cheap bass, good price also good for make your own changes to it

.First I want to say that I've been playing jazz basses for over 16 years of my life and let me tell ya:
Forget about spending thousands on American fenders or any other custom jazz bass from crazy luthiers around! THIS IS THE BEST JAZZ BASS ON THE MARKET! Everything is right about this bass. Very solid built with nice selection of woods for the price. Great string spacing (It's not narrow like everyone says), 3-way active electronics with mid frequency switch toggle... you kidding me? Why fender does not make one single bass like that? I don't understand... Overall, stop looking for 5-string basses now and get this one. Can't go wrong! Kudos to Squier!

.Overall, considering the price, this bass is a 9, if the string spacing was a little bit wider, I would give it a 10.
I love this bass. I own 15 basses, from an Alembic, a Ken Smith, 2 original Tobias', 2 Yamahas, a Conklin, a Spector, to, and of course, a Fender. This Fender Squire bass feels and sounds as good as most of my high end basses. It, of course, sounds better than my Fender, the Fender is passive. But this Squire has already moved into the top 5 of my favorite basses.
I've been playing professionally for over 35 years and I know good sounding basses. I play mostly jazz, funk, R&B, and latin. This bass and its' active electronics is a killer. The only basses in my collection that sound better are my Yamahas, my Alembic, and my Conklin. And for what I paid for it , you can't beat it. It's excellent.
However, I had an issue with the shipping (luckily it arrived unscathed). Custom GuitarsFriend shipped it in just the guitar box with no outer protection whatsoever. When it arrived, the box was half torn open so that you could look right into the box and see what was in it. Not only that, but the seam down the length of the box was coming detached, so the entire box was about to fall apart. Had it remained in the shipping process 1 or 2 days longer, the bass would've been without any protection whatsoever.
Excellent Quality for a bass of this price. It's balanced. No fret buzz, or sharp edges. Neck is excellent. String spacing is very nice, although I would like it more if it were a bit wider.
For the price I got this bass for, It is MARVELOUS!

.I own a variety of high-quality basses including American G&Ls, Fenders & Music Mans...but the 'Beater' that I use on the road is this Squier. I actually quit using the $1575 G&L on the road because I couldn't get the sound that I wanted. This Squier actually gives me a deeper tone. It's without a doubt the best 'bang for the buck' out there in the inexpensive 5-string market. The only mods I have made include: lowering the action, & installing Ernie Ball 'Power Slinky' Strings...thats it. It sounds amazing. It's honestly so inexpensive that it's hard to take it serious, but it's the real deal.

.If you're like me and have been stung by some of the hit or miss quality of the Squires of years past, here's my honest review: Cons - There were a few little annoying flaws such as a tiny ding on the edge of the fretboard and some excess glue around a fret or two. With a more expensive bass I would have sent it back, but for under $350 it's not worth the hassle. The profile of the body is a bit thinner than the MIM of Am. Jazz body. Pros - this is a great bass PERIOD!!! Neck is very wide but very thin and flat, even someone with shorter fingers like mine can still navigate this neck (although I have to take my wedding ring off to do it). Setup was nearly perfect out of the box, only minor intonation adjustments. HUGE array of tones availible from punch to snap and pop. Bridge is heavy and produces great sustain. I know alot of people have questioned the pickups but they suit me just fine. At this price buy 2 and experiment - that's what I plan on doing. Someday I would love to own the Fender Am. equivilant, but for the price I could get 2 of these and a roadworthy amp and have everything I need. I've played and owned Fenders, Ibanezes, Deans,Peaveys, etc. and this is my favorite so far. Get this bass!

.Incredible bass for the money. It has the feel and features of a much more expensive bass. It is a little heavy but, the body is much more comfortable than my previous 5 string. Looks good, plays well, and sounds good too. It did need a neck adjustment right out of the box. But, it is now my favorite bass. Pretty incredible when you consider I would have never considered a Squire years back. I would have no problem gigging with this bass. As a matter of fact, I'm thinking about buying another one just so I can have a spare.

.I'll admit, seeing the "Squier" name instead of "Fender" on the headstock made me a bit reluctant to give this bass a try, so it was one of the last ones I played when I was shopping around. Don't let the name mislead you, this bass sounds and feels better than many basses twice its price. The first thing I noticed is the wide neck and string spacing - it has the feel of a 4-string in a lot of ways. At the same time, the neck feels surprisingly thin and comfortable in my hands. All told, it feels really solid and well-built.As for sound, I'm really happy with both the quality of the sound and the flexibility you get with the pickup blend and bass/mid/treble controls. The only problem I had was that 4 out of the 5 strings were buzzing on the frets out of the box - a quick adjustment fixed that.If you're looking for a good 5-string you owe it to yourself to give this one a try. I doubt you'll be disappointed.
Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass Active V 5-String Electric Bass Guitar 3-Color Sunburst
.For the pros: I liked the wide spacing which is more like that of a four string. Also, the pickups have the active/passive switch which allows you to make it through the gig if your battery runs out.
For the cons: If I got the action below 2mm, there was terrible buzzing at the 17th fret. Some other frets had buzz as well, but not to the same degree. Also, I've seen better tuners.
I would reccomend this bass to someone on a bugdet or someone who likes higher action. Just not for me.

.This bass is an incredible value. I returned a Modern Player Jazz V that had some problems, and picked this up in exchange. This is twice the bass - the quality is MUCH better. The fit and finish was good, the electronics good, the neck and frets were good. The ebonol fretboard was a little softer than I expected, but it plays great. I put flatwound Chromes on it, and the sound is outstanding. For me, I play either the neck or bridge pickup, I rarely blend the pickups. I usually keep the treble rolled all the way off, and keep the bass and mid controls flat.

This being said, the bass is not for everyone. The neck is wider, and the fretboard flatter, than any other Fender product I've played. At first I wasn't sure I'd be able to play it, I almost sent it back. But it really grew on me, and now it feels great in my hand. But it might be a challenge to play for someone with smaller hands.

Looking for negatives, it wasn't packaged well. I may have gotten one that was previously returned, it was moving around in the box. But that didn't matter, it was in perfect condition. The B string has a little buzz on the 8th fret only, I haven't found buzz anywhere else on the fretboard. The only other negative, I think the slap switch is useless. But that's OK, you don't have to use it. I may modify it in the future to use it for something else, like maybe a passive/active switch. Or I may not, it's not in the way of anything.

These newer VM Squiers are excellent quality basses, and this is the best of the VMs I've played. I don't think there's any bass out there in it's price range that can compare with this. If you have average to larger hands, go ahead and pull the trigger on this bass, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
