I play bass for more then forty years. I own 11 basses, including Warwick NT Thumb and Warwick Steamer. Long time ago, I owned ?Fender Jazz Bass 1963?, which I liked but unfortunately I sold it. I recently red a very favorable review of ?Squier Affinity Series J Bass? in the "Bass Player" magazine. I got intrigued with the review, so I went in a music store to test it. I compared it with a ? Fender American Standard Jazz Bass Guitar?, which is built from the same type of wood, and has identical bridge and pickups. I adjusted the same volume and tone setup on both basses and tested them through ?Ampeq BA300 ? amplifier, as I use an identical amplifier. I could not fine any difference in tone. To my surprise, the Squier came with a better factory setup, with a significantly lower action. This bass has a perfect finish. Sound of this bass is identical to my 1963 bass (it uses the identical single coil pickups which are reissued). Although I did not plan to by another bass, I could not resist. I paid $180 for it, which is for almost $1,100 less, then the Fender I compared it with. This bass is simply amazing. If you like Fender, go for this bass, simply save your money. Also, ignore stupid comments like ?this is a good bass for beginners? or ?this bass is not for a stage?. These comments are written by guys who are not serious bass players and cannot judge a quality of an instrument. This bass is simply as good as any American made Fender.Squier Affinity Series J Bass Black Rosewood Fretboard
. I needed an inexpensive bass guitar just to lay down tracks in my home studio. Other than the input on this affinity series I had a hard time believing the price I paid for it. The finish was excellent and the intonation was dead on and it played as well as some of the pricier basses I've played. The pickups with the tone controls gave me the sounds I needed although I use my bass through my interface and not an amp but, I think it would sound as good or maybe better through an amp. This was a terrific buy and I am totally happy with this bass. It is a great bass for a beginner but I wouldn't hesitate to use this in a gig anytime. I only rated this bass at a 9 because the input is a little low scale but hey for the price it's fine. I'm totally satisfied with the Squire Affinity J Bass. Even at a low cost Fender still puts quality in an instument.

. Gave this bass guitar a nine because something has to be really excellent for me to give it a 10.
I have tried an Am Standard Fender bass, and it should get a 10. Not this beginner bass.
Bought this bass, in black, to learn how to play bass. It has a solid tonewood body which is a combination of alder/agathis and a 20 fret neck. It comes with 7250 strings and die cast tuners.
It is really not that all heavy and I use a regular guitar strap with it.
It is really fun to play and I am making progress in my "how to play bass" music book. For my purposes to learn to play bass, it fits in fine with my learning and my budget. There are plenty of better basses out there and I may buy a better one, a standard Fender bass, when I can play better. I try to practice everyday and use a Rumble 30 for my amp.
For a complete bass beginner, this bass fits my purpose.
This bass holds up everyday for practice.
It doesn't cost much to get started and it sounds fine for what you get. No, it's not top of the line Squire, but it is good enough till I can play better. Can always move up based on how soon I can really play.

.I normally play lead guitar. Some friends needed a bass player and I volunteered. I needed to get into something on the cheap and in a hurry. It is impressive that Squier can produce something as good as this is, at this price point. It stays in tune, is playable, has good intonation, is well finished and has reasonable tone. I played a couple of competitors in this price range at a local music store before buying and the Squier played the best out of the available choices. Having said all that, there were a couple of cons. First, I ordered online and when the bass arrived, it arrived without even a basic setup on it. I could deal with that but a beginner (I assume the normal purchaser of a guitar in this price range) would probably be in a little trouble. It also arrived looking to be in pristine condition but the first time I touched one of the tone knobs, it crumbled off into my hand. Surprise! It seemed to be the result of a ham fisted installer in whatever far away land exists where they can build a decent guitar for $200 and still turn a profit. The knob would not have been half as annoying had MF or Fender been willing to simply mail me a knob. The choice at MF is to send the entire guitar back to be replaced by a new one and the choice from the less than helpful Fender people is to take the guitar to a service center and let them assess the situation in person. Most other companies would apologize for the inconvenience and quickly put a knob in the mail for you. Not these guys! Anyway, once properly set up and after the purchase of a new knob and the passage of time to heal my irritation, this thing really impresses when you consider the price. I'm not saying it's a player's dream come true and I would never replace it because there is nothing better out there but this thing would take a beginner far enough to justify it's existence and is money well spent for someone who just needs a very inexpensive but usable/playable bass guitar.Good luck with whatever you buy...

.This is the ultimate beginner's bass. The J bass neck is notoriously comfortable, and this is no exception. Some tweaking at the bridge did help, but was not essential. Ultimately you get a very good sound for the price, but what really sets this bass apart is its reliability. I've owned it for about four years and have since gotten a Fender P bass, and I still come back to this bass if I ever need that J bass sound. It has never let me down, and at gigs it fits in well with more high end instruments. I wouldn't really recommend it to someone who's already been playing, since you might as well get one of the better Squier basses. But if you're a beginner just looking to see if bass is for you, I'd say this is a must buy.

.I traded another bass for this bass - and am pretty happy with it. Neck is very comfy, overall weight is not bad for an electric bass, pickups are quiet if your house wiring is good! Pickups will cancel hum if both are set at about the same volume. I am guessing the signal output is lower than some basses, but the tone is good, fit and finish are good.
I had to adjust string height and intonation on a couple strings, but all in all, a great bass for what I need - good tone, easy to play.
Affinity Series J Bass
Typical Jazz type features, similar to an old vintage one, but has single ply pickguard. 2 volume, 1 tone. Bridge is top loading, which is an issue for some folks, but not me, I think its just fine as is.
Tuners seem to hold tune well. Mine is red finish, looks great. I had to tighten the nut holding the tone knob when I got mine ( got mine used, in a trade with an individual)
Great bang for the buck. Great tone with a good amp.

.I bought this bass almost exactly two years ago. A group of friends were going to "start" a band and I was sure it wouldn't go over. So I bought one of these figuring it would be cheaper and I wouldn't have to worry if things fell through as I wouldn't be out a lot. We'll my friends fell through but I didn't. I bought the bass and it sat on a stand I bought for it for almost a year. Then I decided I was going to learn to play it.I have been seriously playing this thing for just about a year now and let me tell you it's a great bass. From funk to rock to country to just jamming this jazz bass has wide tonal horizons. It's a nice looking bass and with a proper setup its very playable even gigable for the aspiring musician. Is it comparable to a $800 more expensive fender or music man bass? Probably not, but this thing stands above all the other entry level basses. You will need to spend around double to find another bass that sounds/plays/looks this good.

.It is a cheap bass so what all CAN you expect?
-One of the good things about it though is that it is a good base instrument for modification and customization to make it your own. Just put in some new pickups, a new control plate and wiring assembly, and some good strings on a good setup and it's about as good as a MIM Fender. A new neck and bridge would make it a substantial bass. It is but a vessel of your own imagination.

.I've played basses for about 18 years now. I had one of the early Squire Jazz basses from Fender. That thing was a TANK - the affinity I picked up today doesn't have the buzz or the weight of the earlier model. I played a Mexican Jazz and this bass at the shop I was at - between them there was no difference - sound was identical (played through same rig). I already have 5 & 6 string basses so I wanted a 4 for those times when keeping it simple is best. This bass suits that perfectly. I wouldn't feel uncomfortable at all playing a gig with this rig. Alder body, solid maple neck, rosewood fretboard - so besides the fact it says squire on the headstock I really don't think there is a diff' between this bass and the Mexi' I played.(?) Beginner or not this is a fine bass for what you are paying for. If you must pay more I'm sure the sales people wont complain.

.You can comapre this bass with Yamaha RBX 170 and a lot of Ibanez which are in the same price range. And if you close your eyes and play this bass & a Fender Mexican J Bass you will seriously feel no difference....
The Pick-ups/Electronics are passive and is better than the other brand's basic / starting level bass guitars which sell for the same value; you can get good punchy / deep bass sound or slap tone
Get a very good jazz & funky tone from the bridge pick-up.
its really really good. it stays in tune even the freatboard feel very smooth, Paint work is good and shine, I have a red 1.
Black guitars fade early.
Its amazing for its price,
