With all the great reviews, both here and on other websites, my expectations were high on this bass. People are saying this bass is equal to, or better than, the Mexican Fender. It's not. It's a very good low-priced bass, but it's not a Fender.

The pickups on my bass need to be reworked. The pickup screws can't be adjusted further in, even though the pickups themselves have plenty of room. And that brings up another point, there doesn't seem to be enough foam under the pickups, they're a little loose and sloppy in the cavity.

The nut was cut sloppily, the slots are too large (and I use large flatwounds) and the slots aren't symmetrical. The neck is actually pretty good, at least once I cleaned off the excess glue or finish that was spotted on the back of the neck. Fretwork was good.

I got the sunburst finish, and the finish is good, and looks very nice with the tortoise pickguard. But the wood under the finish is all kinds of ugly. It's several different pieces, all with imperfections, and no attempt to match grain was made. But you would have to be close to see this.

I've been reviewing this bass as if it was a Fender, and maybe that's not fair. But all the hype had me expecting Fender quality. This is a good sounding, nice playing bass, and worth every bit of it's low price tag. But don't buy this bass expecting a Fender. I will spend several more hours setting this up, tweaking, and fixing the little things that you wouldn't have to do on an American (or even Mexican) Fender.

One final thing, I've owned other 5 string basses, and had a hard time adjusting to them. Slender necks always felt good in the music store, but I just couldn't play them well. This 5 string neck is wide, but string spacing seems to be the same as my 4 string P Bass. It's a natural feel, a perfect fit, and I was able to pick it up and play - no adjustment time needed. It feels great.

.Short Story:
The 7 piece horn/funk band I'm in all reported that they like the Squire the best of my 3 basses. I agree.

Details:
Even though I have two other more costly off shore versions of "Boutique" basses, the Squire "P-5" has the warmth, clarity and punch we want for the bottom on the funky stuff we play.

At this price point I was surprised and delighted on the quality of assembly and detail and enjoyed the tone and presence of the bass. It is fun to play. It was equal to the quality of my original 1975 4 string Precision - long since gone.

The downside of this price point is the factory set-up limitations: I needed to re-set the neck to remove a buzz in the upper frets. The pickup was set flat across instead of following the radius of the fingerboard. I re-set the angle to tame the D and G a bit.

I prefer a 35" scale to support the B string and would recommend longer version or a "through the body" set-up for the B at least. In addititon to the slightly flabby B, there were a couple of less resonate spots on the fingerboard - low C on the D string; open E - not unusual in even my other bolt on basses.

.I've been a big P bass fan but I play 5 strings almost exclusively. I was pleased to see Squier had put out a 5 string P bass with a single P pickup and thought I would give it a try. I didn't have high expectations for the money but this instrument has delivered. The build quality is top notch. I bought the Olympic White version and man is it beautiful. The neck on this bass is fantastic if you like wide string spacing. It has a wonderful gloss finish that is easy on the hands. The instrument feels well balanced and delivers classic P tones flawlessly. You can't go wrong with this bass, or anything in the Squier vintage modified line for that matter.

.Ridiculous value for money, Fender are going to sell boatloads of these. I changed out the stock strings and gave the truss-rod a quick tweak and this bass plays as well as any of my other, much more expensive basses. The only thing to think about is which color to get!

.This is a really well built bass with a great sound that sits well with drums and percussion. BIG even tone and moderate weight. The fret work is exceptional and very precise. It is tone and pitch stable even when de-tuned 1 whole step! ...with 50.-135 strings ...it has "the" sound and it fits well in any musical style....it sounds and plays as well as my U.S.A. built Fenders..... no joke!

.This is a high-quality, stellar Bass at a very low cost. Big bottom for a maple neck. I'd recommend it to anyone on a low budget if you want a kick-A Bass, that cuts to the chase. Tempted to buy another one of different color and keep as back-up for drop-tuning.

.Great bass out of the box, just needed a little intonation setup at the bridge and a string change to sound great.

Love the neck, really fast and didn't found any dead spots. It was straight so didn't needed any adjustment

The quality On the finish of the neck and body is superb, fretwork is on par of my American Deluxe JB and the pickup is hot and delivers that classic P-bass tone I was looking for.

So this is a great sounding bass, at a nice and Affordable price...

This is my new "go to" bass. I took it out of the box, tuned it up and it was set up perfectly. No neck or intonation adjustment was required. The action is just right for my playing style. The low B string is not as "floppy" as my previous 5 string. Fit and finish are amazing from end to end. The piece of maple used for the fingerboard has some slight coloration variations that would probably be rejected for a standard U.S. made P-bass, but I don't mind - in fact, I think it adds character and beauty. The only thing I anticipate changing will be replacing the pickups eventually. I would highly recommend this Squier 5 string P-bass.. It's a great value for the money.

Very satisfied with the Bass overall ... can't beat it for the price indeed ... was disappointed that the pick guard was raised with a screw exposed ... however, Custom Guitars Friend refunded the cost of repair ... ;-)

.I needed a 5 string bass and didn't want to pay an arm and a leg. This bass is comparable in quality and workmanship to all my 4 string basses. I use EMG pickups exclusively so I installed a P5 and a different pick guard. The finish on both the neck and body is top notch. The bass is easy to play and sounds great. If you want to try a 5 string at a reasonable price you can't go wrong with this one. This one is a keeper!!!
