I think this pedal gets unfair reviews--why are people expecting so much from a ONE KNOB pedal??What you get through is a great vintage tone--it's one of Electro-Harmonix's first two circuit designs. It's a fairly dark overdrive that borders on fuzz but has way more clarity than a fuzz pedal. Also the lighter you pick, the cleaner things get--this pedal can get very clean. Also, back your volume off and get major clean up. So it's a pretty articulate sound that reflects your guitar's tone more that most tightly clipped overdrives or distortions. I like it, I just don't expect a 1-knob pedal to do it all. If you know how to vary you picking intensity and adjust your volume knob for cleaning up, it's actually decently versatile. It's also got great classic/vintage tone at a very low price. Note--I use an LPB-1 after my Muff Overdrive. It expands and fattens things up in a natural (as in, not super clipped) way. .I just bought this pedal and I LOVE it. But, to love this pedal you must know what to do with it. It sounds best when used in conjuntion with a somewhat dirty TUBE AMP. It's not a fuzz or standard overdrive (like a Tube Screamer). The Muff OD is an extremely simple signal booster with some fuzzlike color. I crank it up all the way with a Tele through a couple old tube amps in stereo. If you play through that and it doesn't sound good, you need to reassess your playing style.

.I purchased both this and the Nano "Big Pi" version to give them an A/B for certain covers, and to provide an alternate tone to my frequently used MXR Hendrix Fuzz, which is germanium-based. I position this pedal just ahead of my fuzz, behind an MXR Custom Compressor, and my modded VOX 847 Wah. The pedal has an incredibly low noise floor, noticeably less than the Nano "Big Pi" version, and when you adjust your compressor's sustain and output higher, you get an incredible singing OD tone with a low-frequency harmonic..."Comfortably Numb" solo. Sounds thick and almost growls with a hot set of P90's or more vintage humbuckers. No doubt this pedal will please anyone looking to replicate those early 60's fuzz/distortion tones on it's own, but IMHO, the real value of this pedal doesn't shine until it is behind a good optical compressor with controls that will let you adjust the interaction between them. EH's website demo's this pedal with their Soul Preacher compressor, which gave me the motivation to go this direction. I am not sure, but am doubtful that single knob compressors, like even the revered MXR Dyna-Comp's would produce the full palate of sounds possible, because of lack of adjustment on the compressor itself. Considering the very low cost of this pedal, you owe it to yourself to experience a bit of retro guitar history and expand your arsenal. This is a great value, now in a very pedal board-friendly size.

.Overall great little pedal for the money. I found it really responsive to picking dynamics and EXTREMELY responsive to the guitar's tone control. You can go from snarling nasal distortion to thick chucking crunch just by turning your tone knob down. I bought this to use almost like two distortion pedals. I recently joined a 50s & 60s cover band. So I needed something that would clean up and play nice on stuff like "Johnny B. Goode," (single Muff) but also be able to fuzz it up for some "White Rabbit," and "Purple Haze," action (double muff). This distortion isn't exactly dynamic and nuanced but put a clean boost in front of it and you can get some satisfying sustain on it. This sucker pairs up very well with my wah pedal too. Someday I'll probably drop serious coin on something a little more "elegant" but for now this pedal will scratch the itch. It's simple to operate and you can get a lot of variety out of it based on how you play, but you have to know what you're doing. If you're a "set everything to 11" kinda guy this pedal's not gonna do it for you.
I like the two Muff circuits. That is a cool idea. Not a lot of bells and whistles, but that's what I want... simplicity. I'm not the kind of guy who needs to be able to surf the web and file my tax returns on my effects pedals. I just want decent sound without breaking the bank. I also dig the smaller "nano" size, fits easily on even the most cluttered pedal board.
Seems to be rock solid so in that aspect it gets hight remarks. There are some things that could be beefier, like the switch to select between single and double Muff circuits for example. I like to switch this with my toes. Looks like it won't stand up to much abuse. The pedal also makes an audible "thud" noise when you switch it on. If you time it correctly it actually sounds really cool. But it's not exactly "smooth" in operation. There is also a bit of hiss or noise but nothing you can't work around. I found that rolling the guitar's tone knob down a bit does a LOT to reduce this.
The price is right!!! This is plenty of distortion at an easy price tag.

.I use this with a fender champ II (18watts, similar to a Princeton but without reverb and trem) set to a medium overdrive, and the pedal (set to single) at about three-o'clock, back off the guitars volume a bit and it's a wonderful driving rhythm sound, back off the guitars volume a lot and it's sparkly clean, push the guitars volume up all the way and it's absolute sonic joyful mayhem! I love this pedal!

I purchased the nano muff about two months ago. For two months I tried to make it sound good. Finally I found a combination that works for me. I put the nano muff behind a ts-808 and then a lpb-1. .In the overall game of pedal comparison... and 8 is great. This doesn't do leads very well on just a clean amp, unless its a quiet sort, but on my dirty amp, it just sings.
I am a sucker for simple pedals. I don't like having even tone knobs, just a simple function that has the essentials. So as far as that goes, this pedal is great. However, a volume knob seems strange, I would have put a gain knob. Then again, this pedal reacts to your guitar and the input into the pedal, so you can clean it up with your own knobs and maybe I'm just overlooking the volume knob. being me... I keep it cranked.
It sounds great with a tube amp. Very dark, very even, good grit, not saturated, just real overdrive. My germanium overdrive has a nice brightness so I have either or to go with for option. Apparently if you put a compressor into it you get a sweet boost of volume, gain, and sustain. Through a clean amp, you could add another dirt pedal and actually create some good usable fuzz
Overdrive? And its ehx? I mean c'mon. It is a seriously useful little toy/gadget that is not overpriced and bland or unnecessary.
I kinda mixed up the two value and the quality. But to elaborate, it is essentially perfect. And not that there cant be multiple types of perfect, like a fulltone ocd, but for what this is and what you pay, i have the urge to buy 4 more...just because.

.I received this pedal as a gift from a relative and it has just the sound I'm looking for - nice and scooped. However, playing it through my amp (a Line 6 Spider IV 15) I got a truckload of unwanted hiss. Figuring I wouldn't need it, I gave it to a friend of mine, and when he played it through his Fender Frontman amp, no hiss whatsoever. Not sure why, if anyone can help that would be great.

.One setting, you only control the volume. I can live with that. This pedal hisses (as does the Nano Clone). I have to run it in front of a Para EQ to remove the hiss. I do like the sound of the distortion. Doesn't work well with pedalboards either. If you plug in a Boss Pedal the EH quits, plug in a Marshall the Marshall quits. It has to have it's own powersource or share a daisy chain with other EH pedals. This is annoying, especially considering that it shouldn't be happening by the power specs. You really have to work around this pedal, so you better love the Muff sound (which I do). I don't however, love the power hassle and noise problems.
