If you are looking for a good distortion pedal from rock to full on gain metal, this pedal is great. Having this pedal helps me easily dial in my tone when using different guitars on different amps. I often play gigs using other people's amps, so I never know exactly what type of amp might be there. This pedal gives me some control over my sound, especially if the amp on hand is not one that has a good gain channel. For the price, it has been well worth it, and I this pedal had been out before the other distortion pedals I experimented with.I went through a good amount of distortion pedals, but this one is my go to one in terms of sound, tone, and versatility. Although a pure tube amp overdrive is my favorite, this pedal is great if you are gigging, and using whatever amp might be there. You can dial in all sorts of tone from scooped out metal, to a more classic rock tone by dialing back the gain. The boost switch is great too if you want to really cut through the mix and be heard.
Solid metal case, and switches. I've used it on plenty of gigs, over at least 4 years now, and never had a problem. I usually use a power supply cable, so the batteries don't drain out.
For the price, it is well worth it. I've had mine for years, and I haven't had to buy another pedal. Although I like using my tube amp's distortion, this pedal can still get a great tone when distorting the clean channel on the amp.

.I've been a Heavy Metal fan for 18 years and I've been playing for about 15. I've owned several distortion effects... Really expensive ons too and I just have to say this is by far the best distortion pedal I've used. The only bad thing i have to say 'bout this pedal is that it eats batteries up like nobody's bussiness, but that's easily fixed with an external power supply. If you're into hard rock or heavy metal, don't think twice. Get it!!!

.As long as you don't have internal issues, as mine did, then you'll love the Metal Muff for any metal sound that's ever been used. No better metal distortion pedal out there... as long as it works.
The features of the Metal Muff are absolutely phenomenal. There are so many options to sculpting the perfect metal sound out of this pedal, from a mellow 80's metal sound to the ultra-crunchy modern tones - it literally can do it all. Personally, the standard sounds are amazing out of this pedal, but the true fun comes from turning on the top boost mid song (ie. solo or guitar break). With the proper settings the little tweak from the top boost turns this pedal into something truly amazing. Amazing tone out of this one, no matter what.
The rough metal chassis on this little beast is really tough. I've never had a problem with wear or denting or anything out of the box itself. However, I have had some serious issues with the insides of these pedals. I've had two of the Metal Muffs stop working altogether due to problems with the chips. I'm not sure how many other people have had this problem, but after having two in under a years time break - I'm not impressed.
As far as a metal distortion pedal goes this is easily the best sounding for around the same price as all the other ones on the market. You won't get the features of the Metal Muff on any other distortion for the same price, it's just too diverse.

.At this price, you really should consider giving this pedal a try. It's an excellent boosting stomper if you have a tube amp that doesn't quite overdrive the way you want it. One of the nice thing about this pedal is the eq. It lets you dial in a nice dark metal sound, and still get plenty of overdrive. It's not inherently tight though. An underwound neck humbucker will sound dark but muddy, still a nice sound. A trebly bridge will stay tight, but won't quite get all the way dark. The top boost is excellent for solos. You can even use it in your main sound for rythm/lead if you want a real searing kind of sound. I would say that the downside for this pedal is that it probably does you no good if you own a killer Marshall or Mesa. If your amp already dials up nicely colored, tight distortion, This pedal may make it muddier without providing much benefit. I don't have a killer head, but I do have a head that I modded to have beaucoups of heavy gain. The pedal no longer gets a desireable sound from that head. I get a tighter less muddy crunch/distortion with just the amp head, and I only use clean boosters and overdrive. So, I would say it's a 5 star pedal for most metalheads who don't have that $4000 half-stack yet.

.Run this threw a clean tube amp and you will have some of the best distortion that has ever been made in a pedal. Great analog distortion that does not give you the fizzy, fuzzy, buzzy, bees in a can tone that you can't dial out of the competitors. Don't get me wrong, you can get the fizziness if you dime out the gain but it is controllable and can be dialed out.
The Top Boost feature is a nice tool for giving you some extra bite for a solo but in my experience anything past 10-11 o'clock is almost unusable(loses articulation and gets muddled up really quick).
As a side note, forget everything you know about the settings of your amp when you plug this in. The EQ on this is quite active and will take a bit of time to find your tone. Also, this does need a noise gate of some kind in the loop(as do most).
I highly recommend the MM XO to anyone looking for a distortion pedal.

.I think I've said it all already
I will give this pedal a respectable review because if your amp's natural distortion isn't giving you what you need, this pedal may interest you. I saw one in a hock shop and decided to try it out and it took me all of a minute to hear just how much my Peavey 6505'd lead channel blew it out of the water! Forgive me if I should have know that but I've only had the amp a few weeks. No comparison at all, much fatter and more natural sounding. I also find this pedal kind of thin and lacking in the low range frequencies. I hate to say it but many of the great reviews I've read may be from noob's playing low end solid state amps. For my money, the Boss Metal Zone is a better, more veratile pedal! I'll be bringing it back tomorrow!
Hard to tell from one day
Could be less for what it does.

.I can't believe I spent so much money on other distortion pedals over the years. This one takes the cake for metal. Everything from 80's metal, thrash, rock, to modern "Nu Metal" tones. I'm in awe. If you're looking for a real metal pedal, that saturates, don't hesitate, get it, you won't be disappointed if that's what you're looking for.
Active EQ abilities, overwhelming and impressive gain and volume control that fits the bill.
Top notch
A steal
Electro-Harmonix XO Metal Muff with Top Boost Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal
.This is the best metal pedal I've ever owned. The distortion isn't scratchy like the mt-2 and the fullbore and the eq smokes the twin tube mayhem. Save some money and buy this one first. Stay off the top boost or use it at 7 o'clock for a cool sweep like sound. Don't over do the gain and go easy on the highs and don't over scoop your mids. Just some mistakes we all have made including myself. That's why everybody wants amp distortion and why the metal muff gets bad reviews. If you. Don't like this pedal you either have a junk amp or you don't have a ear for tones. Chances are its your amp if its a dime, valveking,or a kustom just to name a few amps with no headroom. Buy the metal muff before you amp shop. If you can set the amp to a metal setting and turn the metal muffs mid down and the bass control past 2 o'clock with the amp turned up half way or more its a good amp. If not keep searching. I own a bugera 1960 and I can get the most wicked death metal tone you ever heard. I also use a schecter damian elite with the emg81/85 pickups and it makes my amp scream with the metal muffs help. This pedal can do classic rock to death metal. And even blues. The eq is unbelievable one for the history books.
Electro-Harmonix XO Metal Muff with Top Boost Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal
.Great pedal for Metal music. I bought a NS-2 to suppress some of the noise. But I think that is to be expected from a High Gain pedal. No big deal. I like this better than the Boss MT2.
Unless you are a shredder, the top boost won't see much use.
EMG Pickups: I have seen some reviews that say this pedal does not work with EMGs. I am not sure what that is about...I have EMG active pickups and this pedal sounds fine with them.
Electro-Harmonix XO Metal Muff with Top Boost Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal
