I returned this product after a week of evaluating it on my Holton 279. My main problem with this practice mute is that it provides too much resistance when playing. Over time, this can result in embouchure and breathing problems. It's just not natural feeling. In addition the quality is very poor. The control box is made of cheep plastic and could easily break if dropped. The jack connections are also very poor. The included earbuds are junk quality. I used Bose noise reduction headphones with them; however, the sound quality is still poor and not natural. Intonation was horrible. I just doesn't work well. The connecting cord and headphone cord can become a real tangled mess. If you need to use a practice mute, look elsewhere. And, go simple.Yamaha SB3XC Silent Brass System for French Horn
.As a college student living in a thin-walled apartment, my practice time is very limited which is problematic as I'm a music performance major. I bought this on sale a few weeks ago and so far I'd say it's one of the best investments I've made in months. There are of course problems with it, namely the sound quality and the intonation. Because the mute shortens the instrument's tubing it plays sharp, and you obviously can't use your right hand to tune. The quality of sound is not completely true to what a horn actually sounds like, and there is some static heard when using the earbuds they supply, though it's possible that the system just needs higher quality headphones. All in all, I'd consider this a good buy simply because it's better than not practicing at all. It does mute the horn a good deal and while others in the room will be able to hear you play, I doubt that the sound would travel through the wall to another room. You'll need to spend some time playing without it, but again, if you live in an apartment or have to practice when others are working or sleeping, it's definitely better than not practicing at all. Just don't expect it to be perfect, and chances are you won't be too disappointed.
