Opinion divides on which kind of oil is best for maintaining wooden instruments (or at least, flutes). Vegetable oils (e.g. olive oil), seed and nut oils (e.g. almond, peanut, and linseed), and mineral oils, which include commercial bore oils such as 's, all have their partisans. I'm aware that these different oils have different physical and chemical properties, such as different oxidation rates, and that these differences might be relevant to their protective effect. But I don't know how to evaluate this.

That's why I place my trust on a commercial product, specifically formulated for instrument care by the instrument-maker itself, which has an interest in your being pleased with your instrument. I use 's bore oil on a keyless flute made of blackwood. It's easy to apply, absorbs readily, is essentially odorless, and seems to make my flute (and consequently me) very happy.
