I never liked big beaters. When beaters are large for no apparent reason, you're just sacrificing speed for no reason. Smaller beaters pack more of a solid punch when it comes to the kick. Why did ever do away with their old beaters? I'll never understand this.Yamaha Medium Felt Bass Drum Beater
.I often hear at times that Felt beaters are no good or large beaters cause speed or attack problems. This is what I think and this is what works for me. I have lots of beaters. Felt can work very well depending on the size drum and how you tune it. I either use felt or wood as plastic sounds like plastic. I hit the rest of my kit with wooden sticks. I like the wooden beaters I have too. I can use em all. Lately though I have turned to these old felt beaters. I have all the speed I need with my Tama Power glude pedals with cams and kevlar straps. If the kit is mic up it sounds like a thunder on my two 24X18 kicks without drowning out. Then during my solo I turn off the snare wires and do this routine with my hands. I like felt with my hand routine. I have used both wood or felt. I will switch it up from time to time. Drummers from Simon Phillips to Tommy Aldridge have used these beaters and it seemed to work for them. Wood, felt or even plastic sides..... I can use em all. Here is a cool shot of Tommy Aldridge's kit back stage at a Whitesnake show. Notice on the beaters he is using felt for this show. Tommy has in the past used wood or felt.
