I bought this mandolin because of the price and the brand. I knew that I would have to perform a basic setup of placing, adjusting the bridge, and tuning. You can bring it to a music shop, or do it yourself. After I got it set up and began playing, I fell in love with the tone and quality, but the strings dug into my fingers horribly, so I replaced them with a set of D'Addario J78 Phosphor strings, and now it plays so much faster, easier, and with a better sound. This mandolin sounds just about as good as my $550 Washburn M3SW. It is definitely worth it. This was my first mandolin and I still play it on a regular basis. I have owned it for over half a year and have only had to tune it once.Whether you are strumming with your fingers or using a *light* gauge pick, you can be sure it will have a loud sound projection if wanted.
Washburn M1S Acoustic Mandolin Sunburst
.Great playing and sounding instrument. Once set up as good as any instrument at the same price. Very satisfactory for starter mandolin.

.This was bought as a re-stock item. Easily worth 3x the price I paid, because I do my own set-ups (strings, bridge, nut, etc).
I'm not ready to do 'DUELING MANDOLINS' or any serious instrumental work, but this gives you the tone you expect from a basic carved top and back at a great price. Tuners are smooth. Didn't need anything other than bridge placement and strings of my choice to make it first class.
If you need something much better than this, the you are talking serious money.
