When DragonForce guitarist Herman Li wanted a guitar that could handle his otherworldly technique and musicality, both he and Ibanez knew it would take time to get everything just right. It took three years. But they did get it right. The Ibanez E-Gen8 is played by Li exactly as it is, live on stage, in the studio, right off-the-shelf without any modifications. The 3-piece maple EGEN bolt-on neck has the high-speed Ibanez Wizard II profile that gives Herman the playability he needs. A 24-fret rosewood fretboard is special oval inlays.
The Edge III bridge/tremolo design provides even more stability and strength under the most demanding playing conditions. Now in gold hardware for Herman's EGEN. The new Edge III is similar in construction and feel to the original Edge locking tremolo; however, it also features lower profile fine-tuners inspired by the Lo-PRO Edge and massive new-design saddles.
The EGEN8 pickup force is ready and able for a wide range of sound and attack: V7 (H) neck, S1 (S) mid, and V8 (H) bridge. The Vintage 7 neck humbucker with ceramic magnet is tight but bright, very dynamic for chording and rhythm. The SINGLE 1 in the middle position is traditional-sounding yet high output single coil with Alnico-5 pole pieces for even string output. Designed to work with humbuckers in the split position. The Vintage 8 bridge humbucker with alnico magnet is warm yet articulate lead pickup with enhanced overtones. Good harmonics without excessive brightness.
The special scalloped hand grip on the top horn of the EGEN8, modeled from Herman's actual right hand!

For the price, the EGEN8 is a great sounding guitar, and has better tone than any of the non-Prestige S-series models I've previously owned. It's also equipped with push-pull coil-tapping that adds even more tonal options to the wide variety of sounds that are normally available in standard H-S-H pickup configurations. The natural tan finish and sleek body style is quite cool, for lack of a better word. However, what prevents this guitar from being a perfect 10 (in my opinion) is the absence of a super-flat fingerboard. The flatter the fingerboard, the lower the action can be set, while experiencing very minimal fret-buzz. With rounded fingerboards, such as the ones on Fenders, string height is considerably higher (check out several Strats next time you're in a music store).
Notwithstanding playability issues, this guitar is still a great buy for its relatively low price - especially to players who actually prefer higher action.

.Amazing guitar. The Edge III stays in tune after taking a beating. The coil-tapping is incredible; the tonal possibilities are impressive. The stock pickups are great but I plan to upgrade. Warning, though. If you want to replace the pickups and still preserve the coil-tapping, you need to replace both potentiometers and the 5-way selector. All things considered, this is a great instrument. I am not sorry i bought it.

.I'm partial to natural wood finishes, and after seeing the EGEN8 on the Ibanez website, the temptation to give it a spin was irresistible. Out of the box, it wasn't set up at all, but after major bridge and truss-rod adjustments, I finally got it to play fairly decent. The tonal options on this guitar are almost endless; however, the fingerboard feels a little rounded like a Gibson, as opposed to the super-flat fingerboards on the Prestige and Premium models. Nevertheless, a great guitar for the price.
The coll-tap, in addition to the default splitting capability of the H-SH configuration, enables a variety of tones that can accommodate various styles of music
Other than a slight playability issue, this is a quality guitar for its mid-level price.
Great bang-for-the buck guitar.

.Great player's guitar for the money. Out of the box, the action rivaled a JEM with only a minimal amount of fret buzz. Coil splitting's been quite useful.

.I got this guitar as a gift, and I've owned it for a little more than 2 months now. It is light-weight yet sturdy, cool-looking and made for busting out some fast, ripping riffs! What'll probably catch your attention first is the "kung-fu" grip on the upper horn, which is modeled after Herman Li's own hand. It looks cool, but serves no real purpose. There's also a big scoop taken out of the body underneath the other horn, which actually does allow for easier playing on the upper registers. And the platinum blond maple top does give the guitar a really cool, refined wooden look. The pickups are alright; they each produce a solid and different sound, but they're hardly versatile. However, there is a built-in push/pull pot in the volume nob which gives you the option of coil splitting in each position, creating more pickup combinations and keeping the tones they produce more varied. The neck is also very sleek and fast, with abalone dots giving it an elegant look. The tremolo is indeed an Edge 3, but nay-sayers be silent: it manages to hold up incredibly well against almost anything you throw at it. Unfortunately, the gold finish is beginning to fade away on it already, which is strange considering the other gold hardware on the guitar still looks great. Another problem I had was that the locking nuts that came with the guitar refused to stay tightened. I tried everything, but eventually, I had to buy new ones to fix the problem, but it was a cheap fix that cost me under $10. Overall though, this is an excellent guitar for the price even with the small problems I've had with it, and a great buy for if you're looking to buy an S series standard, or if you're a fan of Herman Li!

.When I got to local GC to check out the guitar,it's not what I've expected.Especially a Signature guitar. The finish was plain,no clear coats. The gold hardware was cheap gold plated. It will wear off in time. This guitar was primary for decor on your wall.I decided not to purchase it and ordered The Jackson DKS2 with SKB molded case with the same price.Guys save your money if you want the real EGEN18.I am sorry to say that I'am disappointed.Go check it out for yourself.

.I just got it a couple weeks ago, I man do I love It! I played it for an opening for Steve Vai He loved it. The pickups Are alright. But you can shred like crazy on this thing. My hardware has not showed any signs of fading like the others. I dont think it will fade at all. I love this Instrument.
