Product Features

As an industry leader in the use of exotic tonewoods, Ibanez continues to innovate with their new AEW Series. This fresh approach is manifest in the AEW40AS-NT, with a figured ash top, back and sides. The thinner, amplification-friendly body makes it a perfect choice for gigging singer-songwriters.

A "soft" Florentine cutaway provides easy accessibility all the way to the 17th fret. The Fishman Pickup and Ibanez AEQ-SP2 Preamp deliver excellent reproduction and control of tonal characteristics and easy operation, while 1/4" and XLR outputs give you options for a variety of direct plug-in applications.

The figured ash will give you a distinctive tone and appearance that will garner attention and inspire the imagination. Let yourself be captured by the grandeur of the AEW Series.

I bought the original version of this guitar maybe eight years ago. I have a few caveats but overall I will say that I love it so much and I have been gigging on it since day 1. Weekly these days. The sound gets mistaken for a Taylor but the look never gets mistaken for anything, it's so original. The sound is perfect for my voice and has a crisp, edgy attack that works really well if I'm on a delay pedal or loop.

Now the downside. I had to go to a bunch of stores over three different states to find the one I wanted. The craftsmanship is remarkably inconsistent. Even playing three side by side in the same store they all sounded different. I found the one with amazing tone. Unfortunately of the six that I looked at, four of them had the electronics screwed down too tightly and there were cracks in the finish around the tuner/electronics. No serious damage, and I was able to get it cheaper because of it. But it has continued to crack out from there over the years.

Overall, I will probably keep this guitar the rest of my life. I expect to add a nicer Taylor or Gibson at some point but this is 90% as good for 10% of the money.
