This filter is the best I've used and owned. It's pricey but I got mine used. I liked this model since you have the ability to sculped and tweak the effect much more than the microQtron. The best feature is the mix setting which mixes the straight guitar tone with the effect...very toneful and useful. The gain boost is useless in my opinion, but the rest is all worth it. I use it for guitar and bass and it's the perfect envelope filter. If you can afford this model or get it used like I did, it's a much better overall unit compared to the micro.

.Great for the songs that require fast responses and are otherwise difficult to impossible to play with a wah. Tried the doctor Q first, but it was a no go. So i switched to this
Electro-Harmonix XO Q-Tron Envelope Filter Guitar Effects Pedal
.This is the ultimate Envelope Filter, as far as I'm concerned. There's a pricier EHX-Tron than this, but unless you need it's own little 'send'/'return' loop, this one's the same. It's a little involved-looking at first glance, but for the general range of guitar filter 4 of the 6 knobs are 2 or 4-position selectors that--once set--can be left alone (filter-type, sweep, etc). Only the 4th and 5th knobs really need to be tweaked for single coils/HBs et al: the peak frequency and the sensitivity (squelch). The knob named 'Gain' is really 'Sensitivity' when the useless 'Boost' is clicked off.
This pedal has to go first in line (2nd if you employ a Fuzz) to sound good with other effects. You'll really want your distortion, Vibrato, delays *downwind* of this. This sounds great in front of distortion and delay: less 'quacky', but still BIG FAT notes. It's polyphonic, too (doesn't fart out much when you play 5 or 6-string chords). Now ~that's~ a quality envelope filter!
It's pretty big; think 3 spaces on a p-board. Loud dimmer-switch (*click!*)....But if you need your guitar to babble, say, faster than you could foot a wah, this is the way to go. Quack, quack!

.Looking for that Jerry sound: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0CvgelzifJZ

.its a tweaker device for sure. For a auto was its not finger sensitive enough. it feels like it needs to breath more. I like the product, but don't like all that tweaking. Great price, great shipping!
Electro-Harmonix XO Q-Tron Envelope Filter Guitar Effects Pedal
.The Qtron will provide any guitarist or bass player with hours of endless possibilities and fun. I bought it because I wanted to try and duplicate the classic Jerry Garcia whop-quack sound (Shakedown St., Feel Like a Stranger, etc.). This pedal does it! I decided to pull the trigger on this one when I found out that John Kadlecik (Furthur) uses this in his "B-rig". Unless you are a purist, and insist on shelling out for a vintage Mutron-III, the Q-tron is what you want.
Once I spent a few hours exploring the Q-tron with my guitar, I decided to plug this in to my bass rig. Just when I thought I had tested the limits of this pedal, I found a whole new realm of possibilities with the bass.
No matter which instrument you play, GET THIS PEDAL! You won't be sorry...
