Like the legendary Big Muff Pi of the '70s, the reissue Electro-Harmonix USA Big Muff Pi Distortion/Sustainer Pedal has 3 controls that let you dial in the finest harmonic distortion/sustain ever produced. The Volume control adjusts the output level. The Sustain control optimizes the long sustain with just the right amount of harmonic distortion. I noticed some of these reviews on here don't speak very highly of this pedal but I've been playing for 36 years and this is my 3rd one and I love it! My other 2 still work but the wires running to the battery connector broke after years of repacing old batteries and instead of relying on an old unit with resoldered wires, I just purchased a new one. They're not that expensive and I prefer to use batteries than an adapter. As for hum? Yes, there is some hum in the background but you don't hear it when you're playing. Just turn the thing off in between songs! How hard is that? Now, I will say that I never use this pedal by itself. I run my guitar into a crybaby first, then to this pedal. You don't have to keep your foot on the crybaby, just have it turned on. That gives it that bite! Or you could probably get a similar tone by using a treble booster instead of a crybaby. A crybaby (or a treble booster) gives it a more distinctive tone because this pedal by itself is a little muddy. As for durability? Well, starting on my 3rd one in over 30 years of almost daily playing time, I'd say it's held up very well! Just don't go playing frisbee with it! So to summarize, if it quits working after 10 or 15 years, I go get another one. But hey, different strokes for different folks.Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal
.Good day to all! Engaging this device produces a great deal of hum which is exacerbated when driven by single coil pickups and powered in tandem with 60 cycle lighting. As for the "sustain" function. Both words "sustain and function" are anathema in relation to what these produce. Instead of sustain; harsh fuzz-tone which readily breaks up is delivered in ever increasing increments as the sustain function is increased. The only sound that does not break-up with this action is the hum which becomes loud enough to drown out subtle rifs. The tone function is very either or in is response. Either you have a very thick drowning in mud tone or ear-drum splitting piezoic highs. At this moment I am looking at my 1967 all steel constructed same device. The internal electronics have 4 times the components of the new device in question, and is 1/3 smaller. There is NO sound equality between my 67 device and a new one. Mine delivers clear, sweet, translucent, distinctive harmonics with near endless singing sustain of full chords and single notes which do not break up but transform into rich feed-back. Sad to say that the emphasis on the vast majority of today's faster cheaper electronics in pretty packaging are but pale phantoms and specters of yester-years excellence.

.I been playing for about 30 years, and this thing has no sustain and minor sound qualities. I am greatly disappointed in this purchase, but I like the case so I'll take out the board that's in it and build my own. I bought this because I was looking for some clean sustain, but this paper weight has none what so ever, and the muffling effect just sounds like an annoying grind , at either Hi-Mid-Lo anywhere, and the tone is just a mid range frequency adjuster from about 300 Hz to 900 Hz. Over all this thing is only worth less than a forth of what they are selling it for. I also bought a cheap distortion pedal which sounds 10 times better than this thing. I would advise everybody not to buy this unless you are looking to pay more for less, or less is your thing.

.A noisey pedal, but very responsive, great sound. A one trick pony if what you're looking for is a pretty focused fuzzy sound, only really gets that right at one specific setting, but if you want to screw around with it more it actually does a lot of stuff. Very soulful pedal, integral part of my sound, hasn't failed me yet, and if it did I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

.The value is incredible, considering the quality. I don't think there is a better fuzz out there for this price.
It's fantastic for what you get. You don't need any more nobs than they give you, trust me!
The guy at the store said it is a little bit delicate, but i've stomped the hell out of this thing and it still looks like its new.
A classic fuzz pedal for under $100 bucks. if you are on the fence about getting this for some reason, get off the fence!

.Overall im very happy with this... it was the first pedal I bought an is my most used. A good bass fuzz and guitar fuzz in one.. a reason its been in continuous use for 40 + years. I do wish that it had more clarity. Overall good job EHX. You've don't it again.
It has enough volume to use it almost as a stand alone boost, useful with a dirty amp. Megatons of fuzz and sustain, useful for solos with sustain cranked, good rhythm tones when its backed off. The tone knob is where it sold me... it can, like in the discription, go from warm bass to crisp treble, which makes it a good candidate for a bass fuzz. Perfect for tones like Chris from Muse. Or if you are a Felix Pappalardi fan, turn the tone to half and sustain cranked. This can get good Jack Bruce tone from the 1968 Cream farewell concert. With a wah wah you get a perfect Cliff Burton tone.
I gave it an 8 because the paint will chip easy... be carefull. Other than that its fine, stronger than it Looks.
For what it costs its a steal.... I have 2 of these and love them to death. If you are not happy then there are hundreds of mods out there there to "fix" it. I have played pedals that cost twice as much, yet sound cheap.

.I freaking love this thing.
I don't know how anybody gets by without owning a Big Muff. I don't care what you play, you need this pedal. The Fuzz Face is a great pedal, and all the boutique pedals are fun to tweak and look at, but the Big Muff makes me happy when I step on it. Lead, rhythm, noise, guitar, bass, keys, it just always works.
Had mine for 10 years and it still works and sounds perfect.
Save your money and skip the boutique boxes. You're not going to get anything out of those that you can't get froma a good ol' Big Muff.

.I'm a working Pro...Bar circuit in Canada...for years played BOSS pedals...great sound and DURABLE...nothing against them...highly recommended...Given a PI as a gift! Plugged in and turned on! A 70's growl, punk, hair metal... eliminated a couple of the BOSS...Put it on the pedal board and it was BIG...great impressive look...the sound is great...a little fidley on the knobs...changing settings needs a piece of masking tape marked (Tip) (Duh...) So far so good on durability...A "Stomp pedal" doesn't mean pound on it...If you are a moron who wants to be "the Show"...go ahead and crush it... guaranteed to break in 10 shows...Treat her like a lady...a great live pedal...BOSS is back up rig...now if I could only find a Roadie...

.It performs exactly as advertised. I love the broad range of tone and distortion. Works great with slide guitar as well, creating a very cool low growl. Construction seems a little flimsy, but sufficient.
