It has a semi-hollow, single-cutaway, archtop body similar to that of EE-EE-Epiphone-e-e's Kat series but without f-holes. The neck is a 30" short scale for easier play. Received 2/2013, haven't put it down since! Barely touched my Fender P-Bass & Jazz Bass or Sterling Ray35. This "steal" is now my main axe and least expensive!Nice finish and overall quality craftsmanship. Wouldn't care if it was made in a cave! What a deal!
I dig the pup placement, makes up for it being Short Scale. The very close to the neck pup pounds. Look how large a guy Woody was ... the Short Scale is also fine for my large hands and sausage fingers - very comfortable and fast neck.
With separate pup volumes and a single tone control, as well as adjusting those little round control things on your amp, there should be enough control for anyone to dial into their "heavy" sound.
If, after sitting awhile, despite the somewhat weak tuning machines - only flaw found, it is ALWAYS in-tune no matter the weather and/or temperature.
Change it if you have to, but ... I love it's three point bridge - so easy to adjust. I haven't had to touch it since initially dialing it in.
I setup mine with D'Addario ETB92S Nylon Tape Wound strings (makes for an even warmer-thumpier sound). Through my Genz-Benz Shuttle 9.0 w/ Mark Bass Compressore and Eminence KappaPro LF215 600W in a small cabinet ... this thing rocks! It has literally knocked things off walls.
I would never give a (new) instrument a bad review due to just a "bad" (factory) setup or choice of (factory) strings. The climate in your area is possibly different and everyone's playing style is unique. Of course the setup will need "tweaking" when received - hence all stringed instruments having adjustable setup possibilities. After receiving any (new) instrument I own I've had to adjust the setup on every one for my "style". And, those (factory) strings it came with will probably not be your last.
The light weight makes for hours of joyous fun. My fretting hand will go numb before my back fatigues. Adjust your strap for better balance.
Not bright enough? Woody designed this for his pounding style. Have you heard him play? He was a monster rumbling way at the bottom - hence "Rumble Kat". If a heavy bottom is not your style you should not buy this instrument or return yours right away.
No "buyer remorse" here! I wish they would "sellout" soon, for the future value of this Signature Limited Edition beauty should soar!
Besides, at such a low price the sales also helps out Woody's daughter Savannah's college fund. A small token of all of our appreciation to a guy who has and through his recordings still gives us hours of thundering JOY!

Epiphone Allen Woody Limited Edition Bass Wine Red
.Just got it yesterday and unpacked it when i got home. WOW - really nice, clean and set up to play right out of the box - just needed to tune it. Really great feel. I was a bit worried since it's a short scale that the strings would be flabby but they are pretty punchy and get a great thump from the low E. I ended up playing till 2am - couldn't put it down. This is a keeper to add to my bass arsenal. I have another short scale solid body but this is so much more resonant and acoustic like yet still punchy. I could get great overdriven tones out of it like a Gibson EB or rounded singing tones like a Hofner. Just need to mix the two volume knobs with the right amount of mid and neck pickup volume and get the tone you want. The tone is passive - only cuts the highs. This is a very "old school" type bass but I think it would also work well in Alternative venues. Great for classic rock, Southern Rock (ala Almann Bros., Govt. Mule), Beatles, etc. Very versatile - and it looks GREAT, stunning finish - no blems at all and it's very balanced - no dive at all. All around a great short scale thumper.

Yes, it's a beautiful instrument, and the short scale is very comfortable to play. But...
I found this bass to be extremely neck heavy, & this is very irritating to me because EE-Epiphone-e
could easily fix this problem. A well balanced bass is a joy to play, whereas this is just a pain.
I also found the pickups to be very dull and subdued, as compared to say, Fender Jazz passive
pickups. Tried adjusting the pickups, but it made very little difference. I guess this is a decent bass
if you just want to stay in the background & have the bass track felt, rather than heard. But as for
me, I'll stick with the Fender Jazz as my main instrument.

.Having played a '62 500/1 Hofner from '77 until it was stolen in '92...I have to say that this bass is so close to its equal it doesn't really matter. In some respects superior. The pickups and their positioning provide a smooth noise free blend. Control panel is superior to the Hofner. This is a serious bass make no mistake. Just love the way it looks, feels and plays....Best chambered body bass on the market for me....bar none.

Got it used so I took a chance. Took it out of the box and the bridge was up all the way, truss rod had never been adjusted, and if I looked REAL close in just the right angle I could see some faint scratches from playing. I cranked down the bridge, adjusted the neck, and now you could breathe on it and it almost plays itself. It is definitely a low ender but if you want some brightness or midrange just add it on the amp. The 2 pickups sound different so there is somewhat a variety of sounds. It's quite comfortable to play albeit slightly neck heavy. For the price and knowing how to set up instruments it was a deal. I've been playing 35+ yrs and have 60ish instruments but I am enjoying the hell out of this. It's a nice change from a Jazz Bass or Tele Bass that are my main go to instruments. I'd say if you want a nice lightweight bass that's super easy and pretty light, buy one and you can't go wrong!!!!
The quality seems to be quite good for EE-Epiphone-e. Can't find anything other than the crappy set up but I bought it used so the person who returned it could have done that. Epi get's an A+ in my book for this baby.

.Just got mine from Custom Guitar's Friend last week, and let me tell you, this thing kicks major bottom (if you catch my drift)! EE-Epiphone-e has, during my lifetime, gone from being a company which manufactured great instruments to being a company that manufactured absolute junk, and now they are back with a vengeance! This bass is fantastic. it is super-easy for any guitarist to adapt to, and i would imagine it would be a great instrument for anyone with smaller hands to begin learning traditional fingerpicked bass on, although I can see where someone with larger hands might want to take a more traditional route.The sound of this thing is fantastic. Many reviewers here complain that they would like a pickup selector, but I actually like using the two volume knobs to blend the signals from the pups. this thing is easier to fret notes on than most acoustic guitars. Effortless, fast play. And the pictures do not do it justice. This thing GLISTENS under lights. And for anyone who criticizes the perceived "lack of highs", I would just say: use bright strings, try turning your amp's "high" knob (clockwise), remember it is a bass, not a mandolin, and this above all else: to thine own self be true. .i bought this bass back in may WHen i first got it i realized the pictures dont do this bass justice its so much better looking in person.The red mahgony body and neck give it weight but not to much the bone nut is a nice feature but what this bass realy has is amazing pick ups and sustain that last for days(not realy that long but it does ring for a while). Sound is unbeleviable the middle pick up is what i mostly use unless soling then i go for the neck,the chambered body gives this a bass a uniqe sound and for this price it has left my other four bass to same i find my self playing this more than my fender 50s p bass its that good

.This bass plays great and looks great and I am very happy with the purchase. The bass has a very subdued quiet tone. The shorter scale works great for me. I took the bass to a luthier immediately for a setup and to have flat wound strings installed. The neck, pickup height and bridge all needed to be adjusted. Don't assume your bass will play great because it is new. The biggest negative issue I had was the packaging by MF. The bass was left at my door with the box completely open. MF used a single piece of low grade clear tape for the length of the box and of course it broke in transit. I'm glad I ordered the case and at least they put the bass in it or it would have been damaged.

I have no problem with the 3 point bridge but you will need to cut the silk on the strings for proper intonation. Don't waste your money on a bridge replacment this one is fine.
Simply put, the setup from EE-Epiphone-e was awful. In my opinion the only setup that was done was putting a sticker on the back saying it was done.
Once setup this is a beautiful instrument.
The tone is extraordinary. Some amps I have tried are a little dull but others (an Ampeg comes to mind) are mind blowing. This is true of every bass I think.
It much prettier than the pictures are showing and every time I take her out of the case I get compliments.
For me the neck is perfect and I have never felt more comfortable playing any instrument.
The tuners are sloppy and I will need to replace them. The strings have a really good sound (piano like), but I would replace them if I were you with something better.
This is my number 1 bass and I have stopped GASing for a Gibson. This is the one.
High quality finish. Good solid body. The wine red is very pretty.
