This pedal gets some serious hate. I've come to the conclusion that this stems from one of two things:
1) In many cases, it seems to boil down to personal taste. Fair enough - distortion / overdrive pedals are very different from one another, and different people are looking for different things. This pedal may not be for you.
2) In many other cases, though, I think it's a lack of ability to use the pedal properly. A lot of distortion pedals are more or less "pre-voiced" to sound a certain way, making them "plug-and-play." This isn't one of those pedals. It simply adds distortion, which by itself, isn't necessarily going to sound good to everyone. But you can get a very wide variety of sounds out of it with careful use of the tone and blend controls, as well as - and I can't stress this enough - working with the tone and volume controls on your bass. For example, I've found plenty of those classic, warm, overdrive tones that some people say you can't get from this pedal simply by rolling off the tone and volume on my bass. So I highly recommend that you spend some serious time experimenting with this pedal before you write it off. It still might not be for you, but at least you'll have a more informed opinion about it.
Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal
.I have tried a Bass Big Muff,Boss Bassman,Sans amp bass driver,Rat Pro co, Ibanez Tube screamer, and a Zoom B2, through out the years and have found out, the only pedal, that I use in a band situation, that sounds great is the ODB-3! I have mine since 1999 and it still rocks! I Never had any problems with it.I can get Mild tube overdrive to warm distortion. From Billy Sheehan to Noel Redding, its in this pedal.

.This pedal sounds great on bass. Warm and fuzzy? Sharp and crunchy? Whatever ya want. Tough construction. Good, simple features. Good range. Very practical. And what's nice is that if you are a touring kinda guy and your pedal breaks or someone steals it, most Boss pedals aren't too hard to find, so if you're on the road you can find 'em anywhere.
This may just be my own preference, but this thing also positively destroys as a regular guitar distortion/overdrive/whatever the heck. As stated before, very warm and muffy or very crunchy. Obviously, it's made for a bass, so on a regular guitar, the result is that it can sound very thick and that is OK with me because i really like those big Wino-ish, Melvinsy Doomy kinds of guitar tones that are usually associated with the so-called "stoner rock" big tube sound. But that's just what i use it for because i'm more of a guitar player anyway. You can actually use it for a lot more than just that. If ya want good dirt, you should at least give it a try. This is a pedal for those who yearn.

.Really love it. Would buy again if stolen.
Good EQ section. If you turn up the low all the way, you will shake your house. Its really more of a Big Muff based heavy fuzz/distortion than an overdrive. Like I said its more than an overdrive. If you set the balance control all the way to the left, you could use it as a EQ or a boost pedal. (Which is what I use it for on guitar.) Its really thick sounding and muddy if you use your fingers, instead of a pick like I would use. Sounds alot like dUg Pinnicks bass tone
I have NEVER had problems with BOSS pedals. They have long standing reputation for making dependable products.
If you got the $$, get it and you will not regret it.
Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal
.I purchased this effects pedal over ten years ago back in 2001, it still works and performs as good as it did when i first got it. Boss pedals are built like tanks and can handle all sorts of abuse. Mine still looks like its brand new even after 10 years of abuse. I would recommend Boss effects pedals to anyone.
Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal
.I asked for this pedal for my birthday and just got it a little while ago. When I first turned it on, with all the knobs at 5, I was a little disappointed, but I was able to find a setting that fit my needs pretty well: Level pointing a little bit higher than straight to the left, Bass EQ pointed straight to the right, Trebel EQ at a 45-degree angle to (i.e. at a lower setting than) the Bass EQ, Balance perfectly in the middle, and Gain straight to the right. Being a huge Cliff Burton fan, this setting gives me a sound I like (while soloing). It is true you might have trouble using this with other instruments-especially drums-but the level knob goes so high you'll almost surely be able to get your signal over them (it helps to turn the gain down a little). While the distorted sound is great on its own, you can run into problems if you use a lot of other effects, including wah, at the same time as this box; in the low end, it barely changes the sound. Along with this issue, if you play any chords in the low end with this on, it'll sound like it's behind a wall or underwater compared to the single notes. A good way to overcome these two problems is to use a really light distortion or overdrive between this and your bass (this might cause excessive hissing, though). Keep in mind, I use pretty thick overdrive. If you just like a little grit in your tone, you'll probably have an easier time finding a sound you like. Overall, I'd say this is a great effect, which I'd give a 5/5 if not for the chords and wah issues. The thing to remember is that a lot of people who dislike this pedal are those that don't like distortion or overdrive on bass period. So I'll just say to try this out before you make the call and see if it'll fit your personal style.
Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal
.To say the least Boss is awesome. It has withstood the test of time and musicians all over appreciate them. This boss overdrive pedal is great. It has a subtle mix of high range distortion to mild overdrive textures, that is nice and easy on the ears.
Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal
.Simple features and that's what I like.Very well built and the battery is easy to get to in my opinion.High and low controls (that I don't personally need)gain, balance and level almost dimed out gives it that growl that I want. I was reluctant to get a Boss pedal because it seems that everyone has one.I'm proud to own this.
Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal
.I was in a band with a guy with this pedal, but I'm a bassist too, and i couldnt believe the guy actually used this thing! the first time I heard it, i thought someones amp blew or a piece of nearby auto repair equipment was gnawing on metal. Then i realized it was this pedal! simply not musical, it wont enhance your sound
Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive Pedal
.So, I started bass and I thought I had all my gear. I wanted some overdrive/distortion on my bass since I was playing out of a small Marshall 1x10 combo with little to no variation in sound. This pedal was IT! I love the distortion options on this pedal. Even if I don't need OD, it is great as a volume booster for those standout bass parts during live performances. Overall, excellent pedal for the price.
