I just got this and installed it as a "tug bar" instead of a thumb-rest (ala 60's Jazz Bass). The original placement for this piece was below the G string so that you had a place for your fingers while you played with your thumb, which is how bassists who were used to playing double-bass used to do it. It was moved above the E string as a thumb rest in the 70's, and discontinued in the 80's. The template that comes in the package only covers the thumb-rest placement (above the E string) for both the Jazz and Precision basses, so if you want to get the cool 60's vibe (50's for the Precision) and place it below the G string, you have to eyeball it yourself. Fortunately, there are enough detailed pictures on the Fender site of re-issue bases that have the "tug bar" that it isn't too hard. I did it, and now my Mexi Fretless Jazz Bass looks like a 60's reissue.

.I sent it back...I would not put this on a high or low priced Bass
It was not a semi solid Thumb Rest I thought it would be...You could make a better one out of a pieace of wood and paint it black...
Does not look it in the picture but it is a cheap pieace of hollow plastic.
very cheaply made
Fender Thumb Rest Precision Bass and Jazz Bass
.Thumb rest. That's what it does.
Fender Thumb Rest Precision Bass and Jazz Bass
.I put this on my Fender jazz bass, comes with a diagram that you cutout and lay on your pickguard so you can position it correctly if you want to put it where they sugest. Just line up the marks drill a couple smaller holes than the screws and Wha......llll you got yourself a place to rest your thumb.

.I just got this for my new p-bass. My first bass had one and I really liked it. Man I regret selling that bass. Anyways it is what it is a place to rest your thumb or fingers. I use mine as a thumb rest. Regaurdless if you use this as a thumb rest or tug bar its a nice way to dress up your bass plus its a great price.

.Restoring pieces on my 1970 P-Bass. While many of the Fender replacement parts i've gotten have been pretty good, this piece seems like it's much thinner and more cheaply made. It's fine if what you're replacing is really really bad. I'm leaving the original on as it's ok. the good news is the new screws that came with it were useful.

.It is what you expect with the exception of the guide didn't line up with my mim jazz bass holes.
Fender Thumb Rest Precision Bass and Jazz Bass
.Does what it's supposed to, as in it screws in where it's supposed to go and stays there. Not sure why on a Jazz bass the pre-drilled holes are on the lower side of the strings, but this comes with a template to put them on the top on P or J basses, and that's cool.

.Good.
Fender Thumb Rest Precision Bass and Jazz Bass
.I have a Jazz Bass and mostly use a pick but when I want to use a finger technique I can anchor my hand now. They give you a diagram with it and it can be used above or below your strings.
