To celebrate his enduring influence, we’ve recreated his prized Shell Pink ’61 Jazz Bass that he received from a fan and used to record the Peppers’ Stadium Arcadium and The Getaway, as well as with the supergroup, Atoms For Peace.
A pair of vintage-style, American-made Pure Vintage ’64 Jazz Bass single-coil pickups provides classic, original- era Fender tone with clear articulation, clear low end definition, up-front midrange punch and singing high end. The vintage-accurate stacked concentric controls shape the pickups’ volume and tone, as well as allowing the pickups to be blended in any ratio. The Flea Jazz Bass plays fast and easy, thanks to its period-accurate 20-fret “C”-shaped maple neck with a smooth Road Worn lacquer finish on the back, plus a 7.25”-radius rosewood fingerboard with a 1.5” wide nut. The vintage- style bridge sports four threaded steel “barrel” saddles, adding a touch of crispness to enhance the attack for tone that can power through a busy mix.
Shell Pink is the rarest of Fender’s classic Custom Color finishes, and Flea’s ’61 Jazz Bass is quite possibly the only one in existence. We’ve carefully recreated his personal instrument’s exact faded shade as it exists today, and then applied an eye-catching Road Worn nitrocellulose lacquer finish that perfectly replicates Flea’s playing wear. A special neck plate engraved with Flea’s own artwork commemorates the inspiration behind this instrument. Other aesthetic touches include nickel/chrome hardware, 3-ply tortoiseshell pickguard and aged white dot position inlays. I previously owned a Squier Vintage Modified SS Jaguar bass and an Epiphone Thunderbird-IV bass. I traded both of those in toward this Fleas bass and have absolutely no regrets. It plays and feels great! Having worked in a musical instrument shop for over a year now, I've come into contact with many basses. Despite being made in Mexico, this bass sounds, feels, and plays just as good as any of the USA models I've handled. The craftsmanship is just as good as well. We've had boutique guitars in our shop with price tags of 4,500 that had relic'd finishes that didn't look anywhere near as authentic and detailed as the Roadworn finish on this signature. This was my first purchase from Custom Guitar's Friend as well as my first large purchase ($1000+). I was very anxious about how my package would arrive. I was in class when I received the notification that it had arrived at my apartment and rushed home as soon as I could to grab it. The packaging looked as if the took it straight from Fender to my door. The bass is amazing. I was able to play it straight out of the box. No setup required. All I had to do was tune it. The factory setup was perfect for my style. The images on the website do the bass no justice! In person it is absolutely stunning. What I like most about the bass is that there is no indication that it is a signature model. Only someone who knows about the bass would know it's a signature model. To others it will look just like a normal road worn jazz bass. It is definitely worth the money to purchase this bass. Even if you are not a fan of Flea this is an exceptional bass. This bass replaced my Fender Modern Player Tele-bass as my main bass simply because it is so versatile. Rolling the neck pickup all the way up and cutting the tone all the way back gives it almost a P-bass sound. On the other end of the spectrum, the bridge pickup can get extremely bright and crisp. .Probably the closest I'll get to owning a pre-62 J-bass. I love the concentric pots so much I plan to convert my fretless j-bass to a concentric pot configuration too.

.I played the Flea at a local store and fell for it immediately. I've always wanted a road worn looking bass and this is about as worn as it gets. My only complaint which is keeping my rating to 4 stars instead of 5 was the amount of work I had to put into it to get it where it needed to be. It needed shielding right away because the buzz was way more than normal and I had almost a full turn and a half on the truss rod to straighten the neck out. One of the springs on the bridge had pretty loud vibration also but again adjustments were made and fixed. After getting it to where everything should be it was perfect. Great tone and super easy to play. One of my favorites for sure.
