Overall this is a great bass and has become in a short period of time one of my favorites, and I own 17 bass guitars. The neck is very thin and not quite as wide as other 5 strings which I like as I don't have gigantic hands. In fact, this was a major factor in my purchase.This guitar is probably heavier than most would expect but it certainly feels great in your hands. And if you're not a heavy handed player, the action can be set incredibly low and still be playable with no buzz. Well, at least on mine and with no truss adjustment.
The pups are great and the active preamp permits highly dynamic control of the tone. This is just a great bass guitar to play, simple as that.
Downsides? Well, there were a few. The cutout at the G string side, when running my finger around it, I noticed a slight indent. Almost as if someone sanded it too hard in one spot. I found this odd as mass-produced guitar bodies are computer milled and should require very limited manual smoothing. Its not visible although I can feel it. But since I had no other real issues with the guitar, it was not enough for me to return it and wind up with a guitar that didn't play as well as this one.
Its also easy to scratch the finish as its only stain with a light protective coating, somewhat like a wooden table. So be careful with those giant trucker belt buckles! The jack input is also a little odd. I would have preferred an input on the bottom edge.
These downsides however were no big deal and I'm more than satisfied with it. If I wasn't aware of this bass and its price, if someone were to put it in my hands, I would have guessed its price as much higher.

.After buying this bass, i felt compelled to write a good review; Ibanez definitely deserves some glory.I still find it hard to believe that I purchased this caliber of bass for such a reasonable price. From what i have seen, there is no other bass on the market that offers so many features, which would be considered as 'upgrades' on other basses.Even when comparing the sound and feel to my other bass (Warwick Thumb BO - 4 string, yes Warwick, not RockBass by Warwick), there is no comparison. The Ibanez is comfortable, light and feels custom-made. The tone is also VERY versatile. The Bartolini pickups and EQ have an extremely wide range, so you can find the sound that suits you.I have played many basses over throughout my life. From $400 - to $11,000 and everything in between.This was honestly my best music-related purchase of my life. No regrets, no complaints.

.I'm a 25 year veteren guitarist that started playing bass in '03. I started with specter and schecter basses, then i went to ibanez. This is my second 505. this one has an added feature to it that i absolutely love....the mid switch. i unfortunately haven't quite developed my finger technique to play fast precision rock riffs so i use a pick and i use finger styled techniques. the mid switch helps when i switch techniques and allows me a mid adjustment to my tone when I switch that keeps me from even having to adjust my mid knob. i played through a svt classic and an ampeg 810. needless to say ampeg is the standard for amps and the 505 had that low midrange bite i look for in my particular style of finger play. I also played through a mark bass 112 combo. (obviously different from an ampeg but definately a kick ass brand of amp that i dig!). i had to crank the mids a bit on my 505 a bit, but i STILL found that low mid bite i like to hear in my tone when i use a finger style. with this bass, getting that "piano" high end tone i want, i have no problems on ANY amp finding that particular tone with my 505. I would love a lakland, mtd, warwick, or any fender american. but i just can't afford them.....ibanez to the rescue. i'll take this bass and play it anywhere, any style, any type and size venue. it works for me. there are many reviews about the pickups. for me and what i want for my tone and my projects, the mk 1's do more than what i need, more than adequately. and the price and the quality.....ibanez rules. period. (i also choose the ibanez rg and s series guitars when i'm playing guitar as well.) ibanez.....there is no other for me. i'm good with that.

.I call this the nothing bass with the big tone. I played this bass a lot in the store when I would go in for quite a while then got a great deal on it. It plays so well right off the shelf I've had to do nothing to it. Punchy, bright, thick bass. It weighs a mere 7lbs 6oz the one I got so its easy on the back and has that great piano sound. The bass is really slim though and I'm not hot on the body style, but when I played it and with the slim neck and body it was very easy to play and get a good sound. It made cheesy amps sound great and great amps made it sound greater. For what it is, you get a LOT of bass for little money. I'm thinking about new strings, but why bother? Sounds so good just the way it is. I own Fenders, Steinbergers, Hofners and this is right up there. My new go-to bass. My first Ibanez and not the last I'm sure. The EQ is great and still getting the hang of the Mid switch. The Mid and Bass controls add a lot and just go easy with the treble. The MK1 pups sound great and being ceramic they have a lot of punch and definition. Super slim neck profile and I'm only a little concerned about my strap lock button which seems to tower over the end of the upper horn on the body. Finish had a rough spot, but rubbed out nice.

.This bass has a great sound, but the wood is very delicate, even when using the slap technique can damage the wood with your fingers. I believe it depends on how you play the instrument, I changed mine after a week of use.
The seller told me it was the fifth bass returned.
I realy belive that this bass is not for hard slapping. Cheers

.I bought the first version of this when it was the RD905. The best Bass I've ever owned. I use it for every thing. A session player in Muscle Shoals liked mine so much, he got him one. The other bass he uses in a Fodera. I highly recomend this bass. Used it through Fender amps and Ampegs it is awsome.

.I have owned this bass for one year, and I have yet to have any kind of major problem with it. The play on it is so much better than any other bass I've played. I play at church and when I need to get the lows it comes through without any problem. When I need the highs, it's as bright as anyone could imagine. Ibanez really scored with this bass.

.I was looking for a bass to replace my 5 string Jackson that was stolen. I shopped around and played a few but when I found this one and played it, I couldn't believe what I was getting for the price. A sweet sounding bass that delivers for whatever style you play. The Bartolini preamp/pickups really add to the value of this bass. The neck is one of the thinnest I have played on a 5. I highly recommend this bass. I have been playing for 30 years and own a few basses but I really enjoy playing this one the most.

.I found this bass a few years ago. Its not like the one in the pictures but the back of my headstock does say SR505. Its a solid bass good for novice to experienced players its a bit on the heavy side but thats easily compensated for bu the fact that its really fun to play.
