The thing that I love best about the Tube Screamer TS9 is it lets you sound like you. A common issue that I have with some other pedals is the way the effect sounds the same regardless of the guitar being used. Not with this pedal. Believe the "hype" about the TS9. The TS808 is also recommended, but I happened to prefer the TS9, and it's cheaper to boot.

For those who don't know the difference, an overdrive pedal is best for blues, country, classic rock and good old rock and roll. If you play metal, get a distortion pedal. If you want the 60s "Satisfaction"/Yardbirds/Hendrix era sounds, try various fuzz pedals with germanium transistors.

.This pedal is not for everybody. It is famous amongst blues players, garage rockers, superchurch powergroups, and classic rock enthusiast. It would work for fans of late 70's/early 80's punk rockers, people who are into jam music, Misfits fans, and "light rockers". If you are into devil music, death metal, powerviolence, shock rock, cockmetal, late 90's pop-punk, or "emo", then I am afraid that you might have ahard time finding a place for this pedal on your board. I, personally, love this pedal and feel that it would give me years of use with it's versatility. I would buy it again if some butthole stole off the stage.
Simple as it should be.
This pedal is my new secret weapon. It can range from having the tiniest bit of bite for a "mean and clean" kind of sound, or it can have quite a bit of break up. It can also be used to push your (tube) amps preamp for more of a natural sound. The type of guitar/pickup you are using has a pretty big effect on the way this pedal sounds. For instance, when I plug in my SG, it has more breakup and sustain than my Tele. It really lets the overall tone of your guitar shine through. Poop guitar = poop screamer. The pedal is also very responsive to the tone knobs on your guitar. Between your guitar, your amp, the pedal, and your playing; you are bound to find a sound that you enjoy with this tube screamer.
Being a producer/engineer, all pedals are valuable to me. This pedal, however, seems to have a low frequency roll off around 100hz. It definitely changes the EQ curve of your quitar, boosting midrange frequencies - which may be why it sounds so cool when it's voicing the high notes of your guitar. This interesting effect, I feel, would deem it unsuitable for players looking for a "mesa in a box", or "Marshall in a box". I would say that if anything, this pedal sounds like an overdriven tube combo amp - old style, you know, the ones with just a volume knob.

.Don't buy into the tone snobs.......this version of the tube screamer sounds just fine. Is the Ts808 or maxon stuff better? Maybe, but not by much. This one gets the job done. It sounds excellent in front of a lightly overdriven tube amp. Very smooth with single coils. Gains up nice without all the fizz many others have. Get this one, use the extra coin you save on something else.
It's an overdrive, 3 knobs is plenty.
Very solid. Knobs are nice and firm, not cheap feeling at all. Foot switch works fine. Japan made is always better quality.
For the price, it sounds as good as the other versions. Trust me, the ladies at the club do not care which overdrive your sportin. I have used the behringer version in the plastic case and guess what...very close, slightly less gain, plastic box sucks, I was not booed off stage or anything because I had a cheapo pedal. That being said, the ts9 is rock solid gig after gig.

.If you are past the death metal or Metallica sound phase and are looking for a Hard Rock, Blues, "mature guitar player" sound, this is a great option. Just a great sounding pedal that doesn't destroy your tone...only adds to it. I use to be into heavy distortion, and lets face it, heavy distortion is easier to play guitar to since it hides all your imperfections. Not so with this pedal. This pedal lets your tone and technique shine through. Great pedal.

.Great pedal to have on your board.
It is pretty simple. But it does what it is suppost to. If you have this coupled with Tube amp it really responds well. It is a true overdrive (not a distortion pedal). You can really control the "break up" of the sound with you right hand (if your right handed).
Basic contorls - Gain, Volume, and Tone. You don't need anything else from an overdrive.
Well made. I like it overall. Only complaint is the LED. It is really hard to tell when it's on or not based on the LED. Even in low light it is difficult.

.I don't use it as a distortion pedal like some do, but more like a boost. Roll the drive back, level up, and tone to taste and leave it on and the clean and dirty tones from the amp just sound so much better. Try this pedal if you haven't already!

.I have purchased this same pedal twice now, and essentially found a common denominator with the pedal. I compare this pedal to the ts808 I have, because I just really like that pedal. For me, the ts9 is actually identical to the ts808, but it has a bit of difference in the feel of the gain.

The overdrive is slightly less defined & crystalline, another factor is that is simply may "cloud" a signal more than it does "layer" with the signal like the ts808 does.

There is a slight raise in bass over the ts808 (and the clean signal in general). This isn't good or bad, but I think is what could make this a "hard rock" rhythm tone because hard rock isn't necessarily crystalline & clear.

I think it's a very good tube screamer varient, and I don't think it's better or worse than an 808, I think it simply has a different application. The ts9 for me can do blues, but with it's harder edge, increased distortion & bass can sometimes lead to a bit of muddiness, which doesn't make for sweet edge of break-up tones.

.In response to the review with the Cons: Not For Solid State
Tube Screamers actually work great for solid state amps. Probably not the best choice for a modeling amp or Line6 Spider, but I've used them with Music Man (they had ss preamps), Peavey, Fender, 80s Dean Markley, Yamaha and 80s Laney solid state amps with great results. I have a friend that drives the front of a Roland Jazz Chorus with a TS9 and it sounds fantastic. Plug a TS into a good clean channel you can get great classic crunchy TS tones that they are known for. Or they can be used in a drive channel to achieve really good hi gain that will rival several of today popular amp heads.

.very warm and sweet tone when it comes to playing full or power chords. but not too dirty when picking single notes. love it that it does this.this way I can pick neatly and fill the choruses with dirtyness when only one guitar is playing.
Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer Effects Pedal
.You don't need a mod on this pedal, you don't need another version, this sounds fantastic straight from the box. I dare you to put this pedal up against any other stock overdrive pedal. You can't beat the price, it's almost silly how easy it is to sound like a pro guitarist-and after 30 years, no less!!!
