Product Features

This Ltd. Ed. Jack Casady Blue Royale Bass Guitar comes in a beautiful Chicago Blue Pearl color finish along with distinctive Royale-style Silver Sparkle binding. It features a superb EE-EE-Epiphone-e-e pickup and electronics along with the rock solid hardware you've come to expect from EE-EE-Epiphone-e-e.

Deep, articulate tone and classic semi-hollowbody style are the hallmarks of the EE-EE-Epiphone-e-e Jack Casady Signature Bass. The maple body, mahogany center block, set maple neck, and rosewood fretboard conspire to create a sweet-playing bass you won't want to put down. It has a single low-impedance JCB-1 humbucker with VariTone control, as well as traditional volume and tone knobs. Pearloid trapezoid fingerboard inlays, body binding, and Jack's signature across the headstock set it apart.

Jack Casady, electric rock bass player extraordinaire, worked closely with Gibson and EE-EE-Epiphone-e-e to create this tasty signature model. It's a long-scale, hollowbody electric bass constructed loosely around his vintage 1972 Gibson Les Paul Signature bass, discovered in a New York instrument shop in the mid-'80s. Starting from there, Jack spent a lot of energy working with a pickup designer from EE-EE-Epiphone-e-e putting together a new humbucker to reside in his signature model. Together they nailed down a passive pickup and control section that delivered tone so pure and natural it'll give you goose bumps. The pickup is a special low-impedance model (the JCB-1), which produces a bass sound high impedance pickups and active electronics can't match.

The controls – a volume, tone, and versatile VariTone knob – produce enough variation for any situation. The bass has a unique and high-quality transformer with a 3-way impedance selector which eliminates the need for active circuitry while giving the low-impedance signal from the pickup a boost. The pickup impedance selector (VariTone) allows for sounds from clear and clean with acoustic vibe to deep, round, and growling rock authority.

The body construction is unique, too. It's not a true semi-hollow or hollow body, but a hybrid that combines the best from both designs. Under the bridge is a mahogany center block that adds sustain and helps to fight feedback. This construction allows the top to vibrate freely, giving the bass guitar a more natural, woody tone.

The EE-EE-Epiphone-e-e Jack Casady Signature Bass is as unique as Jack, with a vibe, tone, and innovative features all its own.

I have an older Jack Casady gold top that was my number one bass for a long time so I knew what I was getting into. Over time the input jack and pick-up impedance selector on my old Gold top bass got loose and unreliable so I put it into retirement. It is repairable but fishing the repaired parts through the tiny F-hole was beyond my abilities. Maybe someday I'll get it professionally repaired. In the mean time this new limited edition blue finish convinced me to get back on the Jack. The bass is notoriously neck heavy so get a wide strap with plenty of friction area to keep it from neck diving on you. As with any bass, get and install strap locks. For those not familiar with the low impedance pick-up it may take you some time to find the sweet spots tonally, but it's worth it! The Jack has one of the most articulate and versatile pallet of tones of any bass I've ever played. The one case that the bass will fit in is very large and longer than necessary with a large area of wasted space above the head stock area. A padded gig bag would be a great accessory to add. The finish is superb, the metallic blue with silver binding is a great looking combination and the bass really pops under the lights. The set up was spot on and intonation was quite good with only a small adjustment to the D string required.

.The bass is neck heavy, which I should expect from a semi hollow. But the action was way too high and it arrived with a severe twist in the neck (one side bowed, the other nearly straight) undoubtedly the main issue with the action on the instrument. It was a difficult bass to fret even without the warped neck issue.
And I've been playing for many years on some real clunkers.

HOWEVER, the people at Custom Guitar's Friend were very helpful before the purchase, and more importantly, AFTER I'd requested a return. The excellent service given to me by Custom Guitar's Friend outweighed the shoddy product that I'd purchased. I will purchase from them again.

To sum up....
Jack Casady Royale Blue Signature Bass....... ONE Star ...Try something else.
Custom Guitar's Friend ............................................. FIVE stars.
Out of adversity, they've gained a customer.

.I have used this bass (gold top) in small clubs, large theaters and church worship. The bass is extremely well put together , great finish excellent fret work and a wonderful fast neck. in appearance this bass is a work of art. (I know it is a remake of the 70's les paul). The pick up has an amazing definition that allows the noted to ring true with out muddiness. Over all it is a spectacular bass.

.Have been jonesing for a long scale hollow body bass for years. Tried a shortscale, loved it for what it was, but realized it's gotta be long scale for me. Other than some expensive boutique brands this Epi is the only way to go for a long scale hollow body bass.

PROS: Surprisingly lightweight. Gorgeous to look at. Tone-o-matic switch gives you 3 distinctly different sound palettes to play with. Loud. Full length neck. Big sound.

CONS: It's not a Fender neck.

I'm still trying to decide if I am going to keep it or not. If it had a Fender neck there would be no issue at all. Once a P-Bass player always a P-Bass maybe. I dunno. But ya can't fault an Epi for not being a Fender, so if you are open to it, give the Jack Casady a try.

.I like this bass a lot, even if it's a pretty specific type of sound. Not the most versatile but it feels much more solid than you'd think and has a decent unplugged sound level. It's also gorgeous, FWIW.
