Product Features

Katana—the traditional sword carried by the historic samurai of Japan—is a symbol of honor, precision, and artistry in Japanese culture. Adopting the majestic sword’s name with pride, the Katana series presents guitar amplifiers with smooth, cutting tones honed by generations of dedication and expertise. Born of the development process behind the acclaimed Waza amplifier, these innovative amps embody BOSS’s determined pursuit of the ultimate rock sound. Featuring proprietary circuit designs and meticulous tuning, the Katana series combines traditional craftsmanship and breakthrough functions to produce true next-generation rock amplifiers.

With 50 watts of power and a custom 12-in. speaker, the Katana KTN-50 delivers a commanding range of gig-worthy tones that gracefully slice through any band scenario. The amp also excels for home playing, with a uniquely efficient design and innovative Power Control that provides inspiring sound and response at low volumes. In addition, the Katana KTN-50 includes integrated access to 55 BOSS effects, which are customizable using the free BOSS Tone Studio editor software. Up to 15 different effects can be configured in the amp at one time, enabling you to bring fully prepared tones to the stage in one amp.

A Refined Amp with Inspiring Tone
Designed for guitarists who are serious about their sound, the Katana KTN-50 offers exceptional tone and touch response for stage playing, recording, and simply practicing at home. The custom 12-inch speaker is driven by a special method developed for the flagship Waza amp that optimizes the speaker and cabinet character. This gives you authoritative punch and cutting presence previously attainable only with high-end amp designs. In combination with the five selectable amp characters, the Katana KTN-50 produces class-defying power and expressiveness to meet any playing situation.

Five Original Amp Characters, Honed for Rock Playing
Sharpened to perfection by the BOSS engineering team, the Katana KTN-50’s five amp characters offer everything from organic vintage tones to modern high-gain sounds. Clean is natural and transparent, while Crunch offers satisfying grit and response. Lead has a wide gain range to suit many styles, from fat, stinging blues solos to fluid legato shredding. With DNA inherited from the Waza amp, Brown delivers refined high-gain tone sought after by the world’s greatest rock players. The Acoustic character further enhances the Katana’s versatility, providing optimized tone that makes acoustic-electric guitars sound stunningly natural.

Leave Your Pedalboard at Home
With its built-in BOSS effects and recallable Tone Settings, the Katana KTN-50 lets you perform anywhere with just a guitar and amp. Connecting to BOSS Tone Studio via USB provides access to 55 effects that are fully customizable for your needs. Going beyond standard distortion, delay, and reverb, the selection also includes powerful tone-shapers like pitch shifting, ring mod, slicer, and more. You can load 15 different effects in the amp at one time and use up to three simultaneously. Two tone Settings let you store custom amp and effects setups for instant recall, and you can always jump to the current panel settings at the touch of a button. It’s also possible to connect optional footswitches and expression pedals for hands-free control on the gig.

Grab-and-Go Operation
While the Katana KTN-50 includes many advanced features, it’s amazingly simple to operate. Dedicated knobs for multiple gain stages and three-band EQ allow you to quickly dial in your tone by ear, just as you would with a standard tube amp. Essential effects parameters are adjusted with a simple knob twist, and memories can be stored with a brief button hold. The Power Control is great for throttling back the volume for small stages and home playing, and also includes a Standby setting that mutes the sound for switching guitars or taking breaks. And by flipping out the integrated tilt stand, you can easily angle the amp back for better sound projection.

BOSS Tone Central
At the BOSS Tone Central website, you’ll find numerous free amp and effects setups for the Katana series. Created by pro guitarists, these setups provide ready-to-play sounds for various music styles, and also make great starting points for building your own sounds. They load into the memories in a Katana amp via the BOSS Tone Studio editor software, which is also available at the site. In addition to Katana effects selection and customization, BOSS Tone Studio gives you a convenient way to organize all your Katana setups for different gigs, recordings, and practice sessions.

Mine came from another dealer. MF didn't have them in at the time. I have had it for over 2 months now. To comment on the one lower rating first. The fx are adjustable if you plug it in via USB. Mine seemingly was weak in the delay as well. Easily fixed. But some fx are better than others. None bad though. Good reverb and that Boss distortion that I grew up on. Wanna compare the amps tone to something familiar. Think DSLish. But it really is it's own thing. I really don't want to tag it with another amps tone. So say vaguely similar. With Boss distortion pedals built in. Etc.. I foresee no issues. Well built. It's a solid offering. I asked Boss about the speaker. They quickly responded. 4ohm and a brief as well as polite disclaimer regarding mods accompanied the response. It's great as is. Do a speaker swap and wow.... Really. Huge difference. The amp went from good to great. I went from pleased to extremely satisfied. Is it an expensive tube amp replacement. Of course not. It's neither expensive nor tube. Is it satisfying, dependable and versatile enough for nearly any player. YES... And if you're down for it try a speaker swap. Really huge difference in every aspect of the amps performance. But as it sits it's a solid amp. And should serve you well.

.couldn't get over how great the sounds are cleans are clean reverb sounds great lead and brown scream especially with the overdrive on delay is nice very loud for so small .the line out didn't have much gain going to the board gonna hook speaker to a iso cab let you know how that sounds I have spent more than this on one pedal! totally amazing you got to plug one in!!!!

.First amp I've ever liked with all the knobs set on 12 o'clock (no EFX on). Voices are stunning! Great nuances when adjusting EQ. The EFX are very well selected, and I find no lack of versatility. Great product.

.I read about this amp online and listened to many reviews on youtube. I decided to go ahead and buy one from Custom Guitars Friend.
I can't say enough about how much I love this amp! It has a very nice sound on the clean setting which can be rocked a bit by turning the gain up. The crunch, lead, brown, and an actual setting for an acoustic guitar all sound good as well. A cool feature is the power level switch. (You can set it at 1/2, 25, or 50 watt setting.) It reminds me very much of a tube amp as you can set it at 1/2 watt ,adjust your tone settings, and make the amp sound as if you are playing at a full 50 watts without blowing out the windows at home.
Another cool feature is the built in effects. The amp comes with 15 already stored in the unit with the ability to change them when connected to the Boss Tone Studio. I had to do an upgrade on the software before it would let me change effects. It took me a couple of times to get it to upgrade, as the instructions were kind of vague on how to do this on the Boss website. This is one thing they should improve. (Do not let that scare you off from getting this amp. It's a keeper!) Everything once connected to the tone studio is very easy to use and like the 100 watt versions you get a presence level on the screen to adjust. (The 100 watt versions have a physical control on the amp panel.)
If you are looking for an amp that is not complicated to use, has great sounding effects, built very well, and very portable.......This amp would make a Great selection!! I think Boss has a Winner and if you look around at reviews from all over the web.......You can't find one that does not praise this amp for all it offers at an exceptional price. The fact that Boss made this all work without being complicated to use is a bonus!

.Watched many demo vids on You Tube when these came out. Thoroughly impressed. This amp is LOUD. I play in my studio and seldom use the full 50 watt feature. If you're looking for a good amp worth the money. here ya' go..

.I bought this from MF after reading many reviews online and listening to samples on YouTube. This amp is very simple to use and has a ton of great sounding effects built in. I also like the power switch which lets you chose between 1/2, 25, or 50 watts. I have never seen this on a solid state amp before.
It responds like a tube amp when set to 1/2 watt and you crank up the volume a bit. It's amazing!
I have connected to the Boss Tone Studio and downloaded some other effects into the amp..Very simple. You also have a presence control when connected to the tone studio. The 100 watt models have this on the amp control panel...the 50 watt does not. (so you get a virtual presence control on the 50.) The quality of the effects, simple operation, awesome sound & tone make these amps a winner!
It makes it hard to put the guitar down when you can have so much fun with an amp. I highly recommend the Boss Katana amp line!

Boss Katana KTN-50 50W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier Black
.What an amazing amp, sound. The cleans are stunning. The thing that comes to mind is that i'm playing a 700$ or more of an amp. I play mostly blues, indie, soft pop and some rock and it delivers in every aspect. It is Gigable if played in a Bar, and if you are in a stage, it is also gigable, just have to be miced to a PA.

You will not regret this buy. If you can give a bit more, go for the 100W, not because it has more power, but it has more output channels and a Line Output. The rest it is the absolute same thing as this one.

One thing more, the Delay preset has to be configurable thru the USB connection a Boos Studio App.
