Product Features

The Coronado guitar is back, with greater sound, build and beauty than ever for the guitarist who appreciates a different Fender guitar with a special history. In the mid-to-late 1960s, the Coronado family was Fender's first foray into the hollow-body electric guitar world. Now the Coronado name and style returns to Fender as an utterly cool new guitar in the Modern Player family, with stunning looks, tone and features.

The Fender Coronado guitar's thin semi-hollow maple body has an alder center-block and bound top and back, with stylish bound f holes. Its "C"-shaped maple neck has a 9.5"-radius white-bound rosewood fingerboard with 21 medium jumbo frets and elegant white pearloid block inlays. Other distinctive features include dual Fideli'Tron humbucking pickups with three-way toggle switching, three-ply black pickguard, four skirted "amp"-style control knobs (volume and tone for each pickup) and an Adjusto-Matic bridge with floating "F" trapeze tailpiece.

The original Coronado was a well made hollow body designed to compete with the Gibson 335 series. It was discontinued while I was in high school in 1972. Only us older guys really remember this guitar. I have been playing for 41 years. I really wanted one back in the day but my teenage income put it beyond reach. This reissue is a great retake on the original. It is made in China. Any biases regarding this should be put aside for now. The workmanship is impressive: it arrived without blemish. I purchased the candy apple red version. The out-of-the-box set up was decent, the finish was without flaw, and it sounded awesome. The Fender Fideli-Tron humbucking pickups on this guitar were meant to mimic the Gretsch sound. These pickups are only a "ballpark" figure to their Gretsch counter parts, but they stand fully on their own. These pickups are a real sleeper. The original Coronado had a tendency to feed back a bit worse than other hollow body designs of the day. The reissue is semi-hollow design that reduces feed-back substantially. It sports a beefy alder center block and this can be felt in the heft of the guitar. The neck feels and plays great. It is rather thick compared to other Fender "C" shapes, but it should be comfortable for most players. For players with larger hands, upper fret access may be somewhat limited. The cut-away could be deeper in my opinion, but it doesn't substantially detract from the guitar.
This is a "bright" sounding guitar: it is "Telecaster-esque" tonally. It has the quality of a mini-humbucker: bright but not "twangy". It doesn't possess the beefy mid-range tone of a Les Paul or an SG. If you really like that sound, this guitar may not be for you. If you're a Strat, Tele or Firebird player, you should find this guitar quite intriguing. This is not an inexpensive guitar per se, but it is surely worth the asking price.

.First saw Courtney Taylor-Taylor of the Dandy's use the Coronado, and after some research, I fell completely in love with the Black Cherry, sothe following week I ordered it in to my local music store, and I couldn't be more happy with it. Before this my mainstay was an Epiphone 335 with Gibson 57 pick ups, so I was quite surprised at how lush and crisp the top end of this semi hollow is on all 3 of the pick ups. It's much less jazzy than my Epi, and I now find myself completely attached to the bridge tone, something I hardly used on the Epi previously, bar when I needed it for 60's garage. I would compare the tone of this Coronado to my experiences playing Rickenbacker's, which makes sense when thinking that this was Fender's answer to the British invasion guitars. It's got the same jangly-ness, which sounds incredible without too much amp EQ's and through a nice spring reverb and delay. All in all a great guitar.

.Got a chance to play one of these bad boys through a Fender Blues Jr. amp. Wow. I play blues and classic rock and usually with an Epiphone P93 (definitely check that out if your in the market for a 335 clone). This guitar holds up. Its comparable to a lower end Gibson semihollow or a top of the line Epiphone. Well made with nice tone if you want that BB King feel but want a Fender snap at the same time.

.The out-of-the-box set up was ok, a little to high for my liking, but a couple turns on the bridge and all is now well. The fit and cherry finish was beautifully finished and it sounded awesome. The pickups sounded great too. The alder center block adds some weight, but I really enjoy "feeling" the guitar while I play. The neck is a little thick, but it's fast, very playable and comfortable. All in all a great value and I'm very happy with it!
