I buy most of my gear from MF but I bought this from my local music store, he's a nice guy and I'd like to see him stay in business. This is a great amp ! I bought it to use with my archtop guitars but it was just a bit to lively for me and my archtops. So !!! I purchased a Groove Tube ECC83-S pre-amp tube from MF and substituted it for the stock 12AT7 tube in position V-1. I think this was what the Hotrod series was really meant to be. The best way I can describe the sound of this amp is that it puts me in mind of the 4x10 Bassman reissue but with a lead channel and reverb. The lead channel in this amp is very usable and I think the combination of the jensen C-12k speaker and the sold wood cabinet gives this amp a superb resonance resulting in great tone.

.This GB Hot Rod Deluxe is the best little jazz amp in town. It has a gorgeous sound which can be dialed in with minimum effort! I play a Gibson L4CES and I am loving this amp!!

.I had never before bought an amp without playing through it first, but I have always liked Fender so I decided to get one on line. . . . and I am very happy with this amp. It sounds great with my arch-top. At first, I didn't like the drive channels, ( my Eastman arch-top only has a neck pickup. no bridge pickup), but I later got out my SG and found the drive channels to be just fantastic. Also, I think this amp looks better in person than it does in the pictures. As I have read, the amp is a little too bassey , but with the bass setting on about 1 1/2, it is just about right. The reverb is gorgeous. Set on about 3, you will get a ton of reverb. I don't know what the higher numbers would be good for. ( Alien Zombie surf music ?) But it's there if you want it. Great amp.

.Cannot find a flaw about this amp and speaker combo. Sounds like a bell skipping across a clear lake in clean chanel and you find out "so this is what my stratocaster really sounds like" w/ 12AT7 tube. In drive w/ one 12AX7 tube it has a clean "cut through it" presence that is thick and rich. in more drive w/2 12AX7 tubes sweet gets sweeter and smooth creamy overdrive brings fender tones to life. I have spent many years looking for this and now I own it and love it!!

.When I first plugged into the Fender H.R. Deluxe G.B. model I was amazed at how clean the sound was for a tube amp without being to sparkly and high end like some of the other super clean sounding Fender tube amps that are great, but like I said tend to be too sparkly for my taste and more expensive. I've been playing a H.R. Deluxe iii for years and the biggest problem I've had is the amount of feedback I would get with my hollowbody archtop guitar especially on the gain channels. So I could hardly believe my ears when I cranked the drive all the way up on highest gain channel on the G.B. model using the same archtop guitar, and there was no feedback problem at all, I was able to turn up the master/volume to levels I'd never been to before on my old H.R. Deluxe and they're the same amp the G.B. is basically just a suped up version with a much better speaker, a cleaner sounding preamp tube configuration, and lighter wood construction. I got this amp as an open box item through M.F. and it's like brand new I've had it for about a month and it still fills my room with that new amp smell. I've yet to find any amps that can sound as good as some of the Fender Tube amps without costing a lot more money. There's a reason why they are played by so many professional musicians.

.I purchased this amp as a Blemished model; and upon its arrival - I had to look hard to find the 2-3 scuffs/ peels. The amp was obviously pre-owned.

I did have some issues: 1) Amp would not produce sound upon taking it off Standby. I poked around and saw one speaker lead hanging off. 2) 2nd attempt: still no sound! Wasn't sure if it was a Pre-Amp or Power-Amp side. I plugged into the Effects Return and had sound. So, I went to remove the upper panel. Behold: screws were not tight (Babies must play). I found that the V-2 tube was broken AND the previous owner put a 12AX7 into V-1 (Fender advertises this model with an 12AT7 in V-1). I weighed my options here and pushed ahead - installing an NOS 5751 tube into V-2, and leaving the 12AX7 in V-1. Amp came alive with a huge, warm bloom that I haven't heard in a tube amp!! This amp loves archtops! I am debating about putting a spare 12AT7 into V-1, as the Clean channel is already Jazz Heaven. When I use the archtops' bridge humbucker in the Clean Channel, it sounds clean and strong and there's a good rock & roll vibe there. Haven't tried pedals (yet).

I had read an article where someone recommended placing a 12DW7 into V-2 (assuming a 12AT7 in V-1) in order to clean-up the Drive/ More Drive sound. I may do this also as I don't like the sound of that other channel. (It seems only the new SuperSonics have a good Drive Channel tone).

Bottom Line: I think this is a great amp for the clubs, home and recording studio. Not sure if I want to use the Drive/ More Drive capability. May need more experimenting. I would give this amp a '5' rating save for the speaker cable issue and the broken V-2. When the amp arrived in the Fender box, it had the 8 styrofoam corners on it. But, the container was otherwise empty of all packaging support material you'd expect to see in a box shipped from Custom Guitars Friend. Amp was delivered upside down. So all of this may have contributed to the broken V-2 and the speaker wire issue. (I'll take better care of this amp!)

.I traded in my fairly new hotrod deluxe for this amp, So I got to do a back to back test....without a doubt, at the very least for trad. jazz. this is THE amp....
The amp just sounds more natural, more organic if you will. hard to describe sound in words, but if you are going to be playing standard jazz,, get this thing...

.A Deluxe is just the right size for most gigging musicians. I would say that especially goes for jazz players because the Blues Jr can break up if you need lots of volume. And really, anything bigger than a Deluxe is more than most guys want to lug around. The Benson, because of the wood of the cabinet which gives it a warmer tone, is even more transportable than a typical Deluxe, because it's slightly lighter. I found mine on sale, so that it was less expensive than buying a regular Deluxe and switching out the speaker and tubes myself. If it lives up to the reputation Deluxes have built in terms of being a work horse, then it's a perfect amp. So far, so good.

.I've loved the Hotrod deluxe for years, despite one problem--a boominess that appeared only on two strings on my touchstyle veena. This made it very difficult to get good tone and intonation out of those strings The George Benson model completely fixed this problem. Apparently George had a similar problem, and had Fender fix it, and I was the beneficiary. I'm now playing patterns that were almost impossible for me before.
The amp also has a richer clearer and more vibrant sound than a standard Hotrod deluxe.

My needs are very eccentric, because I'm the only person in the world who plays this instrument. It's a customized Warr Guitar (tm), with a range from Bass to Guitar. I play the amp at a very low volume, then mike it through the PA, because the Bass strings would probably ruin the amp if played at full volume. Consequently, I can't be sure who else this amp would benefit. But it works perfectly for me.
