Fender Custom '68 Deluxe ReverbThese days it seems that Fender is offering almost as many "Deluxe" model amps as Strats, and each new model seems more exciting than the last. I received the latest offering, the '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb, yesterday and have been playing it non-stop. For comparison, I set it next to a mint '74 Deluxe Reverb (Weber C12N speaker) and a Supersonic 22.
The '68 Custom is a beautiful amp, rockin' the bright, cheerful 1st year silverface look that, IMHO, is dazzyling compared to the more sober blackface style. The only stylistic giveaway that is not an original '68 is the pilot light which is turquoise blue instead of the usual red color and the blue looks really cool.
The "custom" aspects of the amp include tube reverb and vibrato on BOTH channels, a Bassman-like tone stack on what used to be the NORMAL channel and is now called the "CUSTOM" channel, slightly earlier gain onset, a Celestion speaker and (arguably) better touch sensitivity.
Except for cosmetics, the Silverface Deluxe Reverbs until '76 changed very little from the earlier Blackface models (2 capacitors) and they are phenomenally good amps.
So, how does the '68 Custom compare to the original? First of all, there will be no argument that the new CUSTOM channel is far more usable and exciting than the old NORMAL channel. Turn it up and listen to its tighter, tougher bass response and add on reverb and vibrato for great tones. On the '74, the NORMAL channel had less presence and gain compared to the VIBRATO channel and most players simply didn't use it (I take the V1 tube out).
On the '74, the VIBRATO channel has more lush reverb and sounds brighter than the '68 reissue. The '68 reissue has a tighter bass response compared to the '74. The softer, compressed, bass attack in the '74 DR has a clanky edge that gets flubbier with power chords as you turn up the volume. Most players reduce the bass to compensate for this, but it is unnecessary on the '68 Custom.
While both channels on the '68 sound great, this is not a channel -switching amp and an A-B box is required if you want to switch channels (to set one clean and the other dirty). Remember that in a non-master volume amp like this, if you want more gain, the amp has to be much louder. Instead of channel switching, a more workable gigging solution would be to choose your favorite channel and then use an overdrive pedal with a minimal volume boost, to go from clean to dirty.
The Celestion speaker is excellent. Switching the speaker leads from one amp to the other suggested that the speaker choices worked best in their respective models.
An alternative to both the '65 Blackface Reissue and the '68 Custom is the Supersonic 22 which is based on the DR. The Clean channel has 2 modes, "Clean and Fat" (really Deluxe Reverb and Bassman), both of which sound great. The Gain channel sounds like the world's best Tube Screamer built into a Deluxe Reverb, with dual cascading Gain controls and four band EQ. (IMHO, the Supersonic 22 because of its all tube build, USA manufacture, and versatility is the best DR- type amp that Fender offers.) The only drawback for some players would be that the Supersonic lacks tremolo.
While this is an updated "Custom" version of the Deluxe Reverb and may be improved from the original, it is by no means a modern amp. No multiple ohm external speaker outs, no effects loops, no power attenuator, no master volume and no channel switching. It is simply one of the greatest sounding amps ever made in a light weight, easily portable format that is great for home, practice, recording and clubs. Miked, it can handle any gig. With pedals it sounds better than anything else because it starts with rich, thick tone.
PROS: The '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb offers TWO distinct and exceptionally good vibrato and reverb channels compared to the original and has a tighter bass response. Its a little less bright with slightly less luster to the reverb compared to the original Silverface but, overall, it may be actually be tonally superior. It is certainly an outstanding amp!
CONS: You can still find good condition, hand wired, USA made, original Silverface amps for a few hundred more than this reissue.

.It's an improvement over the 65 reissue. I owned two of those, one with the green circuit board and a few mods. The 68 custom is not as bright as the 65 and breaks up earlier on the vibrato channel. The Custom channel is based on the Bassman, so it breaks up around 4 instead of 5 and has more crunch. The first i noticed was reverb on both channels. The channels can not be switched from the front. You must unplug your guitar in the other channels input, or change the vibrato footswitch, not sure exactly how that is done. No effects loop, no impedance switch, just an external speaker jack. I have to really crank the vibrato channel volume to hit the sweet spot, around 4-5. At that point, it is very loud, loud enuf for a band. The bassman channel was easier, about 3-4 with humbuckers. Both channels have more gain and bass than my 65 reissues. This 68 reissue is very touch sensitive, very dynamic. If you can't get a good tone out of this, you ain't tryin very hard.

.i owned the 65 RI Deluxe Reverb for 19 years. and replaced it with this. The amp exceeds my expectations. Although it has a lower list price that the 65 RI, it seems to be a better amp. It could be the speaker or transformer, but the bottom line is... I love it.
I am 70 years old, and doing gigs since 1961. this year I'll do about 80 gigs. Believe me, I started with a Fender tweed Vibrolux in one hand and a Jazzmaster in the other. Today when my band shows up 5 musicians all with SUVs start unloading with carts to haul all this stuff. I tell you this 'cause im buying equipment all my life and this is a good amp, and at a good price. I baught mine from Musiaians Friend and it arrived 2 days early. ….I will add Fender Tilt Back Legs.

I had two late 70's silver face Deluxe Reverb amps back in the mid 80's. They were in mint condition and I had bought them used for a price because people were just looking to get rid of them. I ended up trading my small collection of Fender and Music Man amps to buy a couple of Mesa Boogie amps after playing through a Mark I at a local club.
Mesa Boogie amps have been my main gigging amp since that time, but I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Fender amps.
I bought this amp to revisit my old Fender silver face Deluxe Reverb amps and have found an amp that is more versatile and in my opinion sounds better than I remember my original Fender silver face Deluxe Reverb amps sounding ! If you want a Fender amp and you like the way a Fender sounds, buy this amp you won't be disappointed !!!

.This amp does exactly what it claims to do. The reports of the amp "blowing up" or having noise problems sound like they are coming from less experienced users. I have been playing Fender amps over 20 years and do most of my own service on them. These issues are typically caused by loose or bad preamp tubes. This amp has two channels that each have their own unique, classic fender tone. The Celestion speaker is a great choice for rock and breaks up very smoothly. The only problem I have with this is when I play with a very loud rock drummer. It is hard to maintain a good clean sound with a very loud drummer. However, this is not an issue with most drummers. I have been able to compensate for this by swapping out some of the preamp tubes and/or removing one of the V1 channel preamp tubes. Removing the V1 and using only the other channel, and/or using lower gain preamp tubes will give you increased clean headroom. Diehard fender guys have been using these tricks for many many years. If you love great clean tone, and like a small, lightweight form factor, then grab one of these amps and play around with different preamp tubes. You will not be sorry.

I had the Reissue '65 Deluxe Reverb and it was good, this '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb is great. I put a lot of money into my American Deluxe Stratocaster with a loaded John Mayer Strat pick guard to get those Big Dipper pickups. This amp delivers every sparkling ounce of the iconic Fender tone I paid for and more. My Analog Man King of Tone overdrive pedal sings now like never before and both of the channels (called Custom and Vintage on this amp) have reverb, vibrato and distinct tonal qualities. Fender got it completly right on this amp from the Groove Tubes, to the Celestion speaker, to the superbly toned Vintage channel, to the thick canvas cover with embroidered logo and the brushed chrome face plate with blue/green lettering. This amp even comes with a tourquoise on/off lamp. The only negative thing I can say about this amp is the layout for the lettering is incorrect. It should be Deluxe-Reverb Amp not Deluxe Reverb-Amp. That is a pretty small complaint overall but it does make me laugh when I see it. Why not center the word "Amp" too so the lettering would have been as gorgeous as the rest of the amp face. Oh well. 1st amp had problem with reverb circuit / MF sent a 2nd amp right awaycustom side has great tone with the bassman tone stack and rev/vib on both channels.vintage side super clean. haven't got the speaker broke in yet .
This is the first time i dealt with MF and they treated me as if they were right down the street. and the warranty issue was no issue at all. Also this is the first time i ever bought a new amp and am not disapointed

.Fender got it right! The Deluxe Reverb has always been the go to amp for all styles of music. It takes pedals and has that incredible tube reverb. You seriously can't go wrong with this amp. The cosmetics of the 68' add to the whole package. I play garage-soul-rock with my band The Holstered and this amp delivers!

This Fender amp is a joy to play and own.The tonal versatility is impressive. The construction quality of the amp is top notch and so is the silverface trim.This amp can cover rock,blues,country,jazz,or pop styles. There's a special magic to the sound this amp puts out and it has great harmonic character.
The speaker does a great job of keeping the tone alive, balanced and strong. Having loads of vintage Fenders to compare it with and having been a player for 48 years I think it stands on it's own merit and is a worthy addition to the Fender line. It's a real winner.
