OK, its a musical instrument - so what does it sound like? So far I'm impressed by the un-amplified sustain and bell-like ring to the notes. There don't appear to be any buzzes or rattles and the controls all make sense. And, let's be honest, sound is a totally personal thing - both how we create it and how we perceive it. My fingers don't sound like yours, you'll be glad to hear, so reviewing the sound quality of an instrument, for me at least, is almost impossible. Do I believe that I can find "my sound" on stage with this instrument? Yes, I do and I'm looking forward to my next gig to try it out.

So, to sum things up, if you're in the market for a nice looking mid-priced bass then you wouldn't go far wrong by getting your hands on one of these. Well done Schecter.
The Schecter Guitar Research Diamond Series Omen Extreme 5, apart from being a bit of a mouthful, is a 35 inch scale active 5-string mid-priced bass. It comprises a maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, 24 jumbo frets and mother of pearl or similar decorative inlays. I'm a bass player not an expert on crustacea - whatever they're made of they look really good.

The neck is slim and fast, even for my small hands, and its finished with a soft, natural lacquer which adds to the already slick feel. A GraphTech nut finishes things off in a professional manner.

The reltively thin contoured body is of mahogany and topped with beautifully figured and contoured flamed maple. A complementary piece of flamed maple is also used to top the headstock. My particular example is finished in Dark Cherry lacquer and is nothing short of stunning.

Two active pickups are fitted and are under Schecter's own brand name. The volume and tone controls are semi-recessed, which also adds to the contoured look of the top and it only takes a couple of minutes to establish which control does what.

All the hardware is black-chrome. The familiar looking machine heads are fitted in a 2-up, 3-down configuration which is governed by the semi-slashed design of the headstock. The bridge is reasonably solid looking and is constructed in a manner that prevents any sideways movement of the saddles. I believe this is important. Many of the world's most famous basses have bridge saddles that can move from side to side. If, like me, you have a hard playing style then those saddles will actually move during a gig. As I say, its a personal opinion of mine. Either way, this bridge looks to be quite precise.
As I've mentioned above, the finish on this bass is nothing short of stunning. Its pointless looking at pictures of them. You need to see one in the flesh. I wasn't able to do that since I work in the Middle East - I just jumped in and took an online gamble based on other independent reviews that I'd read. I wasn't disappointed. Words fail me. I've scrutinised this instrument for over an hour and I can't find any flaws or alignment issues.

The neck fits perfectly in the pocket which in turn means that the string alignment from nut to bridge is spot-on, as is the string height. Again, I've seen many famous name basses where this neck-to-body alignment isn't quite right, resulting in strings that don't run true down the length of the neck. Well done whoever is in charge of quality control at Schecter.

I've read somewhere that Schecter have the parts for this range of basses manufactured in the Far East, Indonesia I believe, but the final assembly and setup are carried out in California. If this is true it would go a long way to explaining the overall superb quality. If I had to find something to complain about (I'm a Brit and apparently we moan about everything) then it would be the quality of the plastic used on the cover of the control cavity. But who cares about that?

Its also worth mentioning that this is the first bass I've bought that didn't immediately need a setup. Straight out of the box I brought the strings up to pitch and checked the action and intonation, the latter with a meter. Both were as good as I've ever experienced. I've been playing for over twenty-five years and have had all my basses professionally setup by industry respected luthiers. This one doesn't need it.
If you've read this far then you won't be surprised to learn that I think this bass offers remarkable value for money. And, yes, OK, none of us ever like to admit that we've wasted our money, bought a lemon or been ripped-off but you've got to believe me, I'm trying to be as impartial as I possibly can. If this bass was twice the price you would still like it. But it isn't twice the price.

.The Schecter Omen Extreme 5 is by far the nicest guitar I've played for the price. 24 Jumbo frets make the playability a breeze, while the ring of the Schecter active pickups are jaw-dropping with their clarity. Hooked up to an Acoustic B115 250W cab powered by an Acoustic B200H head, the low B string scrambles your brains and rattles the windows. The tuning keys seem to never get out of tune, even in drop-tuning. All the tonal knobs serve and obvious purpose, even to an untrained ear. This Schecter can stand live usage, and never gives you those "oh-my-god-this-is-the-worst-time-to-not-work" moments. Not only is this bass a great deal, it is gorgeous! I would definitely recomend this guitar to anyone looking to buy a new axe.

.Went to a local store intending to buy a MIM P bass, I play in a Country/American band and was craving to upgrade to that P bass sound. This thing was so pretty I gave it a try. Never played 5 string much because of the chunky necks and the muddy sound from the B string. Which made them seem more of a novelty instrunment.
First off the sound blew the MIM P bass out of the water, indepndant pickup controls, tone control and master volume make dialing in the active pickups easy. Battery access is easy on the rear of the body so changing it out can be done on the fly, The set up was dead on, the wide neck is comfortable and the B string is clear as a bell. Obviously the stock strings are junk, ordered the new ones from MF on my iphone as soon as I walked out of the store.
The picture on here does no justice to that deep black cherry finish on flamed maple. More red than picture but not a gaudy, fire engine red. The look is great and my 73 year old mama thinks it looks good, so it's not alot of flash... But we have all been burned by pieces of junk in pretty packages. The sound and feel are so good they made an old country player pass up on a Precision to buy it.

I had never seriously considered a five string, thinking they were for the Jazz and Funk players, now I can see why I haven't always played one. I don't need to reach down to the low B-C# (but do occasionnaly just because I can) but love being able to play low E-G# in the second position, gives me a lot more flexability!

I have played for over 30 years and can say this is NOT an entry level or start up instrument. I would take and play this bass anywhere and dial in as good a tone as anyone.

.I love this guitar. I've been playing for 32 years and this is the best bass I've played.

.This bass guitar is amazing. It has an amazing tone on any amp, and it has a very fat, round and full sound. The looks are amazing and this bass is absolutely beautiful. I play in a punk/alternative band and my church band, as well as 2 jazz bands, and this bass guitar can produce the sounds I need for those very different genres in those bands. In my punk band, I use alot of mid range and high end in my tone to get that classic punk sound. The only gripe I have about this bass guitar is that there is no mid range cut/boost controls. But, this bass makes up for it with its' superb blend control from the bridge pickup to the neck pickup. The bridge pickup is very snappy and bright, as the neck pickup is very deep and warm. SO, now let's talk the playability. This bass guitar is made out of a maple neck. It is very smooth and has no rough edges. The creme binding on the sides, for some reason make the neck feel alot more comfortable than a bass without binding. The strings are held closer together than most typical 5 string basses, which is especially appealing for bass guitarists with smaller hands, and hard rock/metal players. I have had the same strings on my bass for 2 1/2 years now and without the amp, they sound very dead. But, when you plug the bass in the amp the strings sound crisp as ever, due to the active pickups, which sound very much alike EMG mHz's. I have tried out many 5 string bass guitars in my life and nothing compares to the sound of this, not even Fender, MusicMan, or Warwick. I have had many compliments about the way this beast looks and sounds, and even from the professional sound engineer I work with when we played at Summerfest in '09 said that this bass sounded like it should be in the $950+ range, which is a huge compliment coming from a professional. I used this bass as a secondary when he told me this, and he said that about this bass guitar over the $$ Warwick I was using; and when he said that, this became my main Ax, and has never let me down. The quality is superb, even right out of the box, I didn't even have to adjust the bridge or anything. NO fret buzz. I have so much faith in this ax that I don't even carry a backup bass anymore. It is that rock solid.

.This is a great buy the bass comes set up ready to play, I was a little skeptical of buying a Schecter. I am an old school Fender or Rickenbacker guy but for the price you won't go wrong with this bass lots of thump for the cash.

.I bought this bass a while back as a back up to my 5 string Specter Bass. THis became my #1 axe almost instantly. It is easier on the hands, sounds just as good, looks better on stage than the Specter. I have the Cherry finish and receive complements every show on the bass. The neck and string spacing is perfect for me, everyone is different so make sure you at least test drive one at the local music store. Over all you can't go wrong with this bass. Enjoy

.after alot of search time i decided on this bass. it doesnt dissappoint! i bought the trans ocean blue, its an amazing color. it pounds no matter what kind of music you throw at it. the pickups are amazing and it came strung with d'addario strings. the action is spot on right out of the box. the neck is just thr right size if u hate jumbo frets like i do! but this bass you will love it1
Schecter Guitar Research Omen Extreme-5 5-String Bass Guitar Black Cherry
.got this bass on an overstock sale because i was looking for a midrange active. what i got was way more than i expected, this thing sounds awesome! i play through a fender bassman 250/210, and after about 30min of playing with different settings, i had it set up perfectly, and it has stayed in those settings even after many shows and bumps and rough truck rides. the tuners are great, and stay locked in quite well. battery life is very long, after probably 30 shows, i'm just into my third batt. if your looking to go from a passive to active and don't want to break the bank, this one is a great way to make that step. i promise you won't be dissappointed.

.Bought the Omen Extreme 5 after test driving a Fender Jazz 5, Schecter Elite 5, and a Schecter Damien 4. Played all of them through an Ampeg Pro 4 and an 8/10 cab. After comparing prices, playability, and tone I settled on this.Great neck(smooth & easy to play), controls offer a wide range of control, low "B" string sounds awesome, not muddy. Black Cherry is gorgeous, pics don't do it justice! This ain't a high dollar bass but at this price I think it's a better value! Play one and you'll see. That's it!
